Before I pull the trigger, I would appreciate hands on experience with this new offering by Remington, and what optics you would suggest. I was initially thinking 308 but hearing good things about the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I have lots of various firearm experience but i’d Like to get into recreational precision shooting. As I get better, I’d like to expand my range and I’m looking for a riffle / scope that I can grow into (100 to 500 or so).

I do like this Remington 700 but I am open to other suggestions. My budget is around 2k.

Thank you

Guy

I just started to put together a Rem 700 Magpul in 6.5 Creedmore. I bought a barrel action from Frontier Firearms, the bottom metal/magazine from Al Flaherty, the Magpul hunter stock from GP tactical and a Nikion Monarch from Reliable Gun. I had to source the action screws on EE. I was about to put it together when I realized I didn't have any scope rings that would work, so I can't report how well it shoots yet and I haven't decided on a muzzle break yet. I picked Remington because they easy to get work done on them, and I'm familiar with them. The whole setup feels pretty solid and should be a shooter I'm guessing it will be shoot on par with my Remington 700 police and my 700 R5

Thx for that, I look forward to hearing how it goes.... the Remington QC issued have me worried a tad. If I can find a Remington R5 mil spec at a good price it might be a start. I heard the QC on those is just fine as you pay more.

Thoughts ?

I have one in .260rem and really like it. Being able to get a R700 with a threaded barrel, has an extended bolt knob and is already cerakoted saved me a lot over doing those things to a regular model. QC on mine is great but YMMV

Glad to hear that feedback - my backup is a Tikka CTR but I’m used to a mil spec 700 so would prefer that if I can get the quality I’m used to.

Any other opinions or thoughts about the Remington 700 Magpul or the Tikka T3x CTR. I love the feel of the Tikka but upgrade stock / parts not as easy to get and expensive.

Remington is easy to customize but QR could be an issue - though I hear this model is solid.

Though choice...

I would go with the Tikka T3x CTR it's a much nicer rifle out of the box and very smooth and very accurate. I had a Remington 700 5R Milspec and the quality control on it wasn't great either, the headspacing was way off. After I had some work done it was nice and shot excellent.

The Tikka is just so smooth. If I were going to buy another factory rifle I would go with a Tikka.

Go with the 6.5 Creedmoor. It has a higher BC and less recoil. When you decide to shoot further it will become an advantage.

If you're going the Remington route, you can buy one ready to go or build it yourself. The barreled action has a 24" barrel as opposed to the remmy built one which has a 22" so if you build it yourself you could get higher velocities. The cost is pretty much the same either way.

Go

What did you need done ? factory warranty repairs or Gunsmith work ?

That QC concerns me.

Definitely would prefer a good shooter out of the box.

Thx

I don't mind upgrades here and there over time as I get proficient and increase my range, but would definitely prefer something great out of the box for that purpose (likely 200-500/600M, maybe more but not likely to 800/900/1000M range).

Thx

Had a 700P LTR in .308....Took it to a shooting course and the 6.5 Creedmoor guys consistently had way more hits than the .308ers (very windy day). By the time I was going to rebarrel, buy a chassis and upgrade everything it made sense for me to sell and buy new. Bought a Tikka T3x Tac A1 in 6.5 and it's just so smooth and has all the upgrades I would have done to the CTR anyway. Just look how many people have issues with their Remingtons compared to Tikka. I wish I would have got the Tikka in the first place.

Out of the four 700s i've put time behind. 2 were great, 2 had issues. My sps aac-sd(308) was awesome, great shooter, wish i didn't sell that one. My buddies gen 1 5R(308) has a rough chamber, makes hand loading a huge pita. My sps aac-sd(300 blk) was fun with the upgrades i did but the scope base holes were slightly off of center, not a huge deal unless you put a high mag scope on it,(nightforce br cause i could). I currently have an older 700 in 7-08 that is a shooter, no issues.

No personal experience owning a tikka but lots of my friends run them and they all rave about them and have had zero issues.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone - I'm strongly leaning towards the Tikka T3x CTR at this point.

Choosing the right optic will be another though choice, but will search other threads before starting something that may have been beaten to death already.

Cheers

If you can get out to a local shop and handle anything in the Tikka line (if you haven't already) it'll be worth your time to do the comparison. The Tikkas are very nice. The new T3x stock on the CTR and Varmint are quite nice for factory stocks as well. Yes there are oodles of upgrades for the 700 but Tikka is not far behind.

I own both. Remmys in 7mm rem Mag and 6mm Rem, but they are older versions, early to mid 80's versions. I bought the Tikka supervarmint in 7mm rem mag (set trigger option) because of what I already had. The Tikka has a better feel, both in the action as well as the trigger. The money you are going to spend to get a M700 to feel and perform as well as the Tikka is going to put you in the red budget-wise, because the Tikka has those upgrades already included in the purchase price. As far as upgrades go, stocks are there (GRS comes to mind), triggers are probably not necessary, the Tikka one is that good. Rings and mounts are solved by going to the piccatinny way. Glass for 600M to 1000M as you wish for is available, the current 5.5-25X available from many of the top-shelf manufacturers would be worth looking into.
Just my .02$ worth...

"Pulled the trigger" and went for the the T3x CTR - no regrets. Had a chance to shoot it before buying. Very Smooth !

As far as glass goes, looking at Nikon Black X1000 series or Vortex Viper HS-T but haven't physically looked through them yet. Will take care of that this week end. Was thinking something up to 14-16X was enough... maybe not.

Congrats!! ... On that Rem 700 I had on the course I actually had a Vortex HS-T 4-16x. I thought it was good enough for my needs to but on the course we tested all of the scopes by placing them on a bathroom mirror and turning the knobs to watch the tracking of the crosshairs. My elevation worked fine however as much as I cranked the windage knob, the crosshairs wouldn't move....until I moved the elevation knob one click and the crosshairs would SNAP (you could hear it) into place. I told the instructors this and they all verified it. Thankfully they lent me a scope for the remainder of the course as I would've been fuct. (It was a Leu 8 - 25x....wasn't a big fan of it, but it worked). Sent the scope back to vortex under warranty and they couldn't figure anything wrong with it, so I sold it.

If you plan on hunting with the rifle I would recommend the 4x due to the the field of view however if it's just going to be for target shooting I'd go with the 6x. In the price range for that Nikon I'd also take a look at the Athlons and Sightrons if you get the chance. But I'm sure that Nikon would be great so long as you don't need FFP.

Thx will look into those as well.

Thx

I had the headspacing corrected, bolt lugs lapped, trigger pull set to 1.5lbs, devcon bedded into my MPA chassis

I think you made a great choice going with the Tikka you will be happy.

From experience save up and buy a scope once if you settle you will just replace it later. Lots of great options out there figure out what you want out of a scope and go from there.
