I have the 500 S&W in the big Smith double action. It comes with a set of rubber Hogue grips and you soon find, using the heavier bullets available and with max or near max loads, it has the ability to inflict pain, at both ends. Fitting it with a set of modified Jordon Trooper stocks made the recoil a little more bearable but it's still a 'handful' to say the least. Accuracy wise, everything I've put through it shoots well!! Not long ago, I also acquired a BFR, but in 45-70. As with a comparison between say, a double action 44 Smith and a 44 Ruger, I'd venture to say the recoil in a single action design of the Ruger is a little easier to handle. The single action grip design rolls up in your hand and absorbs some of the recoil whereas the double action grip frame pounds straight back.
From a standpoint of brand and/or quality, in my opinion, both the S&W and the BFR good and very comparable.
