Good day Gunners,

I just wanted to share a bit of news with you all.

Wendell Horton passed away this past October at the age of 91.

The true love of Wendell's varied sportsinterests was that of target shooting, and he enjoyed much
success at both indoor and outdoor ranges over many decades. He competedannually in the Inter-
Maritime Match, the oldest rifle match in North America which is competedalternately in each of the
Maritime provinces, (the match originated in 1874). Over the course of his involvementhe won many
awards and numerous Governor General medals. He travelled to competitions inOttawa and the US
many times and the culmination of his shooting career occurred in 1979 when heearned a spot on the
Canadian team competing in the UK National Rifle Association match heldannually at Bisley,
England.
During his association with competitive shooting, he nurtured interest andoffered support to aspiring
shooters and played a huge role in ensuring the continued success of the sport.
Wendell's success in the realm of rifle shooting was not solely in the role ofcompetitor as, during most
of the time he was competing, he was also playing the vital role ofadministrator to the PEI Rifle
Association – he was Secretary-Treasurer for an unprecedented 37 years. In thisposition he was
responsible for liaising with the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association, arranging and collecting
membership dues, and arranging for annual invitational shoots at the localrange in Alexandra often
involving up to 50 shooters. In 1982 and 1984 he was responsible for welcominglarge teams from the
UK and presented their officers to a host of dignitaries in PEI.

He was pre-deceased by his daughter Wendy, who once held the title of Canadian Womens TR Champion.

shooter Wendell Horton, donating his late fathers’ two Target Rifles to the PEI
Provincial Rifle Association President Dave Hanson. The rifles will be used by
the club to further the sport of target rifle shooting in the Province.

Props to the son for doing that. I know nothing about target rifles but that ss barrel rifle in the middle is a beaut.

As it sits at this point, Wendy's rifle is good to go and will be available this spring for club members and visitors to shoot (with factory loaded ammo only).

The other two still need sights, as they got separated from the rifles between the time Wendell went into a seniors facility and now. One (Sportco 44) has a Central peep sight base and the other (Mauser action) I'm not entirely sure...

Wendell was a fine gentleman and shooter. In respect of his memory I wish to point out that the Inter-Maritme is the oldest team match held in North America that we are aware of and was first shot in Saint John. Just confirmed with Wendell's long-time shooting friend John Marshall who confirms that the IM was planned in 1885 and first shot in 1886 and was between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Trophy is a beauty, Sterling sliver from London and dates to origin of match. As Mr. Marshall points out, we have a rich history that is and can be used to promote the shooting sports.

With kind regards,

Peter

That is very generous hope the Club takes good care of them

"AND VISITORS TO SHOOT". So if I'm visiting PEI this summer and am a TR shooter would I be able to obtain permission to shoot one of these rifles? BB

Yes, of course. If you are a conjoined PRA or DCRA member the "one time visitor" insurance fee of $15.00 is waived, since we shoot on a DND range.
Feel free to PM me once you know when you will be on the Island and I'll be happy to make the arrangements.

We shoot on perhaps the most scenic range in Canada. Alexandra Range is a 600yd facility with electronic target markers and is surrounded on 3 sides by the Atlantic Ocean.
