Commitment phobia on revolvers. Help!

I have always been fascinated by revolvers, the classic lines, the simplicity, but just like when I purchased my first 1911, I am having a hard time comitting to owning one. That being said shooting 38special is awesome, I truly love that cartridge.

I also have small hands so the massive heavy rugers have really no appeal for me.

Any pointers to 1 or 2 models I should be looking at. I get overwhelmed and I usually give up if Im faced with 27 models to choise from.

Colt python if you can afford. Some of the other older Colts as well have grips compatible with smaller hands.
I have seen some nice 686 as well go with the -3 If you can find one

Good suggestion. It's basically a stainless version of the Model 19 isn't it?

Yes and no. The earlier 66’s were essentially stainless 19’s. The new 66-8, while still a K-frame has several large design changes such as a sleeved/tensioned barrel and a redesigned forcing cone. The result is supposedly a more accurate gun capable of firing magnum loads all day long.

It’s on my short list but I won’t buy one until I can see in person and pick the one I want. All of the QC stories make me cautious.

I think I do recall reading something in my SC of SW about them being beefed up a little. I've seen a few of those 66-8's for sale. They interest me but, like you, I'd want to handle one in the flesh before committing.

I have a '70's nickel Model 19 that I really like. However, as I've said, I shoot mostly .38 wadcutters. When i do shoot .357 it tends to be in my heavier framed guns.

I have the option to shoot 357 in one of my guns but prefer 38spl ...

I'm thinking about a single action 357/38. Would like a more traditional appearance but with a roll out cylinder. the reproductions I find have really small grips and very small trigger guards.

I have 6in 686, 6in. Dan Wesson, but my go to gun is a 4 inch s-w model 19, which will not be for you, but a model 14 which is the same in 38 special is a super gun, and not that heavy, the L frames -585, 685 are heavier
you don't want a N frame, big and heavy, the Ruger are little heaver, a older security 6 would work for you, most have short barrels.
The Alpa's if you are looking at new are a good buy, but though I could sell them, I have not handled any, other than a couple 22's
the cold colts are nice, but getting high priced, value wise, there are others, off shore, quality can be iffy.

I've got an old 66-1 as well as a 586 (both are 6" barrels), and I prefer the feel of the smaller K frame than the L frame. As others have said though, the L frame guns are a bit sturdier if you're shooting lots of heavy loads. The extra weight also keeps the recoil down a bit, and the 66 isn't that much fun to shoot a lot of heavy loads with. If you're around Kamloops, you're welcome to try them both out.

Probably the closest you'll get to that without buying a clone of an 1973 Colt is going to be a S&W Model 10 or similar models that has the tapered "pencil" style barrel and fixed sights.

Other than a High Standard Double 9 which is a tip out hand ejector style cylinder in a style that looks a lot like a single action I don't know of any others. And certainly not in center fire calibers.

The 4.2" Ruger SP 101 is perfect for your needs.
.357/38 special smaller 5 round cylinder, perfect size.

The price has gone up on all Ruger's, but there is one on the EE right now from a reputable CGN'er

Out of the revolver cal's I've owned eg. .22/22mag, 9mm, .38/357, .44spcl/44mag, 460, the best for me (cost/fun/accuracy) is 45ACP wad cutters.
If you can find a S&W 625....buy it!

I have 2 9mm revolvers but still won't commit to a 357 revolver and it has everything to do ammo cost. Without going to reloading I don't think I can justify not shooting the 9mm but shoot 357 or even .38

Makes sense.
I have an Alfa 9mm and it's a well made revolver and shoots great.
I'm not sure why anyone would question the quality of the Alfa's they are well made. The trigger feels a bit different and the reset can hang up if you don't let the trigger go back far enough between shots. Nothing that can't be overcome by shooting the gun and getting used to it.

I often hear people raving about Smith and Wesson Triggers and talking down Rugers but I have a few Rugers with nice triggers they just feel different then a Smith and Wesson.
Same goes for the Alfa's they have a different feel.

Revolvers are the real deal. Pick one and it will make you love it. SAA and DA/SA you can't lose, you'll want both. I agree that the .357/.38 spl is a sweet gig! I down load .357 for that Goldilocks round. S&W 617 on sale at Al Flaherty's right now. K frame 6" revolver wit 10 rounds of .22lr. neat gun. Got one on the way. 686 4.25" are all over the place. Awesome revolver! Do it!
