Got to shorten my Bucket List y-day

I had an appointment in the Big Smoke y-day and, as luck would have it, Cabela's was across the Henday from where I was at so no choice but to go browse. Right?

The store was not busy at all and I had nothing in particular in mind so I was just lazily wandering around enjoying myself. I wandered past the "Gun Library" where I understood a bunch of high end expensive firearms lived while locked up behind glass. A young couple came out excitedly talking about a firearm and so I thought WTH I am in no hurry. Now keep in mind I live so far out in the bush they have to pump sunshine in for me and I don't get to the Big Smoke very often. So I was surprised when I went in to find all the high end firearms gone and lots of used/consigned(?) firearms in their place.

I have been seeking a 257 Roberts and a 7x57 for quite some time now so I figured no harm in looking. Drew a blank on the 257 but surprisingly there were TWO 7x57's both in Ruger M77...one a 77R and one the original 77. The staff was right there, happy to show me both rifles, provided a bore light and talked rifles and calibers with me.

The M77 was a nice rifle but had a muzzle brake on it and was well used. The 77R was in great condition but had a really poor plastic stock on it. After dithering back and forth for a while I chose the 77R and brought it home. The stock issue I plan on making a winter project and putting some nice walnut on it or a composite. The prices on both rifles were surprisingly good with the 77R less expensive.

I bought a Vortex Diamondback scope to see where the chips fall with this rifle but was disappointed to hear that Cabela's no longer carries Ruger scope mounts. He said they usually have a Burris or Leopold change over but were out of stock on those as well. So I will have to source some mounts somewhere.

I mentioned to the staff that they should have their used/consigned on line and he agreed but said store management doesn't think it is worth the effort.

So one more off the bucket list. Now to find that elusive Browning 257 Roberts....
Dave

Nice rifle..... Stocks for those come up on the EE all the time..... for the ruger rings, Prophet River is your friend or even Amazon......

With a Ruger in 7x57, you should be looking for a running mate in the Roberts in an M77.... I absolutely adore my ultralight.......

Edit: Not my rifle, just a stolen pic from the interwebs....

I would buy a .257 Roberts in a Ruger M77 so fast it would burn the numbers off the bills if one became available. Shortly after I made the original post here I went to visit the EE and wouldn't ya know it!! I missed a Browning A-bolt in .257 Roberts by 3 hours.

(Insert appropriate swear words here) !#$%^&* :bangHead:

But I'll be patient I guess and one will come along some day. Or I will finally get P.O.'d and go buy a new Kimber. lol

That is what I did, this crew is (top to bottom); 6mm Rem, .257 Roberts, 6.5X55 Swede, 7X57 Mauser and .350 Rem Mag. The 6mm and .350 are hitting the bricks because I have them covered in M77 MKII Stainless rifles... and I have some No.1's on the way in.

Nice rifle... great purchase!

The "R" designation only means "Rifle - No Sights," it was used with the tang safety M77, the M77 MKII and is still used in the M77 Hawkeye... it does not indicate which series of 77 the rifle is. I assume that you mean that you bought an M77 MKII with 3-Position safety?

For Ruger scope rings call Snapshots @ 1-450-427-0052... or I can fix you up.

Hi Hoytcanon and thanks for the info. I did reply to you on another post, the one about the Gem rifle.

I do indeed have a MKI with the two position tang safety. The plastic stock warped my brain and I got thinking about it today and checked a little closer. According to Ruger's web site my 7x57 was made in 1981. The rifle itself, sans stock, is in amazingly good condition for it's age so I am very glad that I purchased it.

The guy at the counter in Cabela's went into a long spiel about how poor Ruger rings are and that they don't sell them anymore. The Ruger rings that I have on my 1974 Ruger have worked perfectly fine for all these years so I don't know whether to believe him or not?

But at this point I think I will just locate and purchase some Ruger rings and decide on a stock. If I can't find any locally I will contact you and thanks.
Dave.

I was lucky enough to grab a nice Ruger 257 Bob recently, great little gun!

Very nice Freddy! Some day....some day...

Whelanlad would you care to explain your comment about not buying a Kimber if I currently like Ruger? Not starting an argument or nothing, just asking so I can understand your comment.

I "LIKE" a lot of different firearms, Browning being a fav, but I stay grounded in reality and understand that all manufacturers have strengths and weaknesses. But at the end of the day I apply the same acid test to firearms that I do to horses (and a few other things in life).

"Pretty IS as Pretty DOES!"

and ANOTHER one off the Bucket List !

I feel like I need to pinch myself and wake up. After searching a LOT for a 7x57 and a 257 Roberts for the last couple of years I managed to close the deal on a 257 Roberts tonight !! :dancingbanana:

I can hardly wait to get my hands on the new rifle that I purchased from a regular CGN'er, a Model 70 Winchester Featherweight in 257 Roberts. Anyone know some good prayers to say to the Canada Post Gods??

It just seems a little unreal after searching for so long and missing on a few nice rifles. This should be a FUN spring around here while I get to know two new rifles. Now I have to go to the Big Smoke and buy some glass for the new rifle and a bunch of rifle food. Plus my son in law texted me last night and told me that he picked up his new Kimber in 280 AI.

I think I am headed into our shop tomorrow to build a new shooting bench. :sniper:

Congrats... nothing more fun than heating up the barrel on a new rifle... except heating up the barrel on two new rifles. I will get back to you on the stock as soon as anything turns up.

Very nice my friend, I do love a good ruger. I currently have a fantastic M-77 lightweight in 223 and a ruger #1 in 7x57. The 7x57 is a really fun round I love how mild it is plus its just such as classic round that you simply cannot go wrong.

Here is a picture of my 7x57 and the ugly bullets ive been experimenting with.

Ain't it grand living on a farm where you can just walk out the door and decide to do some shooting? I sometimes take it for granted until friends or family remind me.

I like the Ruger #1 and perhaps someday I might buy one. I am looking forward to trying out the 7x57...and the 257 Roberts as well. Are you casting your own bullets?

Those big ugly bullets have lube groves, but I'm not seeing any lube... watch out for significant leading.

Well my purchase of a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in .257 Roberts arrived today safe and sound. I felt like a 7 year old at Christmas opening the packaging. Thanks Darrell.

Just by coincidence my new rings for my Ruger M77 7x57 showed up today as well. Thanks WGP.

Now to buy rifle food, and new bases and rings and scope for the Win 70.

Once I get everything mounted then I get to watch the thermometer for the temperature to break -20 and the sky for the snow to stop.

Now to re-populate my Bucket List....LOL.
