Powder Prices

I believe it's just the opposite the U.S. is running on all cylinders and the need to hoard is lessened hence the prices may stabilize or even come down

Yes, it looks like manufacturing of gunpowder is up. I see several US retailers are currently running sales on powder and they all indicate much the same thing. Hoarding seems to be down and prices are dropping. Not so for bullets though. Metal prices are up offsetting the reduced consumption meaning retail prices overall being pretty stable.

That's not how it worked for the majority of the 40 years I've been buying - prices go up in a good US economy, and when a democrat controls the Whitehouse or Congress. To make it worse our dollar often tanks at the same time the US economy is gaining traction. Double whammy.

Prices have already come down in firearms and related stuff since the election because there was no Democrat elected to scare the yanks into more stockpiling. That actually lead to excess stock for many firearms manufacturers who were anticipating another couple years of strong demand when Hillary won the election, which many people forecast would happen at the time.

One thing I've learned the hard way is regardless of economy, exchange rates, etc - prices don't go down often. This past year has been an anomaly and we shouldn't necessarily think it will continue. Manufacturers and retailers were caught with excess product on hand and they have dropped prices to dump stock of existing inventory. You can bet they have decreased or stopped production at the same time and eventually the over-supply situation will evaporate. Especially as the US economy keeps gathering speed.

But every man for himself obviously, so if waiting for better pricing makes sense to you then that's what you should do. I have been stocking up on a few items if the price is right like it has been lately. There will come a time sooner or later when you will look back and say "dam, I wish I'd bought more of that stuff back when the price was low." That prices will rise is guaranteed to happen eventually, the only question is how soon.

I've got enough powder on hand for several years of serious shooting so I'm just cherry picking when the very good deals show up.

I hedged my bets by saying "may"

There's no sure bet on anything but I won't be caught short on shooting supplies again in this life time. For me, buying powder and components is like buying an extra can of beans at the supermarket - it might sit in the pantry for a month but it won't go to waste.

Same here I have always kept a min of 2 years supply and that goes back to the 70's since down this way it has always been hard to get
After that last shortage I probably have doubled that
Cheers

Great topic.I have found other suppliers that I had not heard of in the past. But I just got a shipping quote from one supplier in Ontario for $160 plus tax to ship a 8lb jug of H-4831sc?

I got in touch with Humminson this afternoon. I live about 1200 miles from their location. To ship 10 lbs or under is $45 total shipping and $55 total for 16 lbs . I find this not bad espically if you can get a few guys in on it.
These totals include the haz fee.

What you need anyone else for? 16 lbs - that's only 2000 rounds of .308 or 6.5CM, give or take. A couple or three months supply, maybe a week or two more if I'm running out and conserving or the weather is really bad.

I guess I don't shoot as much as you

Yup, you'll need some buds to share the load then. Of course, you could just stockpile and purchase less often. Then you too could be one of those "Last time I bought it, I paid ten bucks for 20 pounds and Pony Express had it here the next day." Just kidding of course but keeping an 8 pound supply of Varget and 4350 just makes sense to me. Substitute your personal powder choice(s) . . .

You know, the more I think about what you said the more I believe your right. You just convinced me to make the order. TKS
