Questions About My New (and first) AR

Just recently purchased a savage msr 15 recon, waiting for the paperwork to go through. Have a couple of questions as a first timer AR owner, can't seem to find a ton of info on any forums about the recon:

1. I don't like the rear flip up sight that comes with the gun at all. The front one seems fine for now, but I want a rear with dual apertures. Will having different branded front and rear sights hinder my ability to zero them? (Feel free to throw in a recommendation for a good, steel, quick deploy rear sight)

2. From the little info I've found on the recon, the Magpul BAD lever won't work on it because the lower is custom forged and there's a lip above the trigger that interferes. Will any extended bolt release (I.e. phase 5) work with the savage? I'm not gonna file/mill down my lower just for one of these levers, but it's something I'd like to have.

3. The info I have found all says these guns run like a top. But if anyone has experience with one and had any issues/problems to look out for I'd appreciate hearing about em.

Super pumped about this rifle, I'll sit patiently and keep reading/watching videos about ARs til I finally get mine :bangHead:

Shoot it before changing anything. When I got my first I figured I'd want a bad lever and a bunch of other do-hickies. None of them have been warranted as of yet. I haven't seen an MSR yet, but you can't go wrong with a Savage. Congrats.

I'll definitely be shooting it first to get a feel for it, but the single aperture rear stick sight has to go for sure.

Don't bother with a Bad lever. Learn to handle it properly before you go super high speed. Personally I hate them.

You won't have any issue with different sight brands as long as you stay away from specialty ones like gas block hight or micros

The best people I have seen run ARs all learned on bare bones ones.... then upgraded as they learned what they liked or didn't like.

Congrats on your 1st AR.

I picked mine up from SFRC during their Boxing week sale. The rear iron sight as supplied is for back-up only, also I was not able to get my front sight low enough to hit point of aim. Cranked all the way down I was still 4 inches low at 25 meters.

You-tuber Outdoor Life Oaklahoma was able to get the phase 5 lever to work by milling the receiver just above the trigger.

I have had one trip to the range with mine and it has not skipped a beat. Shoots 1 1/2 MOA with 62 grs. PMC X-TAC and 3 MOA with 55 grs. Norinco white box. Still not sold on the Blackhawk grip as I prefer the feel of the Ergogrip myself.

This is my set up:

Thanks for sharing your experience. Only makes the waiting worse though, dying to get my hands on mine!
