Hey guys, I’m looking to buy a rifle for my dad. He’s got a problem with coyotes and wolves chasing and trying to kill his deer at his place. (Likes watching the deer, hates coyotes. LOL) Distance will be avg of 100yds out to 200. It has to be lower recoil and he wants a auto loader. I’m going to scope it with a 2-7 or 3-9. My thoughts are a browning BAR in 243 or a Ruger mini 14 in 223. What are yours thoughts on my choices for the application? I’m normally a bolt/ lever guy so I wanna make sure my choice is a good one. Thanks!

Not sure I'd go for the Mini-14. You can get some more accurate Ar platform guns for the same price range.

Coyotes are open all year. Wolf with a tag.

Is he a good shot? Pretty steady?
Maybe a KeyMod XCR-L in .223? Pretty light, low recoil and accurate enough for minute of Yote at 1-200yds esp with a scope.

I’ve thought about something like this, but I want to try and keep price around $1500 for the gun. I don’t want to go crazy as it’s gonna spend most of its life just sitting there. He’s not the best of shot but has killed lots of coyotes with a 760 30-06, just a little much for him, wants to tone it down a bit.

Thanks for the info, I’m not real versed on the Rugers. I’ve read the good and bad about them. I’m not a real black rifle guy, but whatever non restricted rifle I can give my dad that’ll work for him would be perfect.

bar in 243 sounds like a good idea if he isnt into the 3 g plus NR rifles...

where in ONT? SWO I can come wack em for him

I’m going to consider all rifles mentioned, going to see what fits me best and go from there. Thanks for the offer, but he’s over in Trent lakes area.

Benelli MR1

Getting up in price range, but a pretty decent rifle I think.

Theres a lot to like about the Troy PAR. Not semi auto fast, but with some practice it’s pretty quick. Probably among the most accurate guns on the list. And the short barrel is a big plus. Can get even shorter with a barrel swap. I love mine, it gets the call when I’m headed out for those pesky tricksters. When I get my SLR together we will see though. I’m tempted to make a LR rig out of one, maybe in 243, so maybe I’ll do that. And for reference I have had most of the NR semi MSR on the list. I honestly didn’t even think I would like it as much as I do.

Thanks for all your replies so far guys, my dad is dropping over today to see the grandkids. I’ll quiz him a bit more on what we could get away with in terms of gun style. He’s old school so I’m not sure about the “black rifle” style, but you never know. Another consideration I came up with last night if he’d stay with a pump (after Uisge suggested the Troy par), would be a Rem 7600 243 or a 7615. Thanks again fellas!

Aren't they expanding the area around Algonquin?

You never mentioned location.

Talk about first post thread derail?!! What are you? The law? He asked for rifle advice pertaining to species, not when and if he had your permission to shoot them. You need to get over yourself!! f:P:

BTW OP I run a newer mini-14. Works great out to 200 yards with 55 gr jhp on yotes. Recoil is almost non-existent. I can’t see why with a little heavier bullet like a 62 - 70 gr it wouldn’t flatten a wolf at those ranges?

Didn't you just derail the derailment

My, and the experiences of others are that the mini 14 is a POS that may hit a coyote at 100 yards, but at 200; 50/50. I will never buy another one.
