Hi Gents,

I need a little bit of help here. I had a very good discussion with an expert on German markings when I posted multiple pictures of firearms held by my Regimental Museum. Sadly, I can't track down this discussion and I forgot who he was.

I'm trying to help a friend identifying a P38 pistol. I need to know what the markings can tell us about the pistol and if it is unusual or not. It could have been assembled with parts of the first model and also from parts with the second model, which I do not know if it could be possible.

I have some pictures of te pistol and just have to figure how to post them here. It's been a while I didn't post anything.

Factory: AC
Year: 1941
Serial #: 4049c

Thanks for your help!

It is good information but my friend already had a look at it.

The story behind this pistol is because my friend is in UK. You probably know how difficult it is to get a handgun in UK and he is trying to get this pistol as "historical".

Obviously, I didn't find the way to post pictures here… this post is almost useless without pictures...

Photobucket no longer works for this as they have gone to a fee system.

Thank you for the links on how to post pictures.

Just created my FlickR account… let's have a try!

Beautiful early P38 2nd variation, correct serial magazine. Has I believe postwar British markings under barrel. Thanks for posting.

The barrel appears NOT to be a factory original wartime Walter barrel.(it could be a P1/P4/P5 barrel) The 4 German wartime manufacturers didn't have markings on the bottom of the barrel like you show in your picture. Lets not forget that CYQ/BYF/AC/SVW were making P38's simultanenously as fast as they could.
Plus P08 Luger production was winding down in 1941. It doesn't appear to really be a mystery pistol, its more like a used wartime 1941 Wather frame & slide with a much later barrel.....
