I want a 44magnum, lookin at a performance center Smith & Wesson 629 Hunter Revolver, .44 Remington Magnum, 7.5" Barrel, Black Synthetic Grip, Two-Tone Stainless Finish, 6 Round, muzzle brake, and a red/green dot 170318 Anything anyone would buy that is better?? Just going to shoot at the range. I want a quality gun. I was also considering a Ruger red hawk??

Have a super red hawk in 454 Casaull, excellent gun. Also Taurus Raging Bull in 44rem mag with a ported barrel also an excellent. Use the right load and It's good at the 100. So many choices, currently playing with a scoped Contender pistol in 44 with wad cutters. Thinking of getting a Red Hawk in 44 myself. Would match my 454.

Ruger for strength, Smith for trigger. Can't really go wrong with either.

Just so. I liked the idea of the Ruger better so I got one and am perfectly happy with my choice. Anyone who prefers a S&W isn't wrong, they should get one and I expect they'll be just as happy as I am.

"Ruger for strength" is a comfort to those of us buying a used one and not entirely confident we can judge the condition. The trigger can be improved once you have it. As with all guns, you'll probably shoot better the one that fits you better, so if you get a chance to handle, or even better shoot one or both before you buy it's worth the time and ammo.

Ruger Redhawk trigger pull is not as nice as my 686 but I wanted a heavy cal handgun that is why I bought the Ruger. I love my 454. I always found that if i had to choose between two guns I eventually ended up with them both. Pick one and you can always pick another in the future. A man can never have enough toys. Now the money to buy the toys is sometimes the problem. You don't find guns they find you.

Hold on until the new Taurus Raging Hunter hits the shelves.

If Desert Eagle made a revolver; It would look like this!

The Ruger is built to handle +P+ loads. If you are an experienced reloader and want to ramp it up, you can do it with the Redhawk. There is basically only 1 brand of really heavy duty factory 44 ammo (Buffalo Bore 340gr) that we have access to in Canada that would not be suitable for the Smith. A steady diet of fast moving heavy ammo (e.g. 300 gr 1300 ft/sec) would not be optimal for the Smith either I suspect, but the Smith could handle the occasional cylinder of it.

For basic factory or factory strength magnums (e.g. 240gr from 1200-1300 fps), which is the hottest that most of us go in 44 because even that is pretty stout, the Smith will handle it no problem. One of the other member here has 14000+ (some very hot) through his Smith 629 and it is still trucking.

I like them both but have a slight preference for the Smith (design, handling, trigger). I'm not concerned about its strength but I only shoot standard factory magnums and specials.

What gdawg said. ^^^

I'd also throw in 'keep your eyes open for a Colt Anaconda', but the price point can be prohibitive. I believe they are as stout as the Ruger, some disagree, but I'll stick to my opinion on it. It's a great pistol. When I shoot .44, I only take my 629 Hunter anymore. It just fits. I'm currently having a serious love affair with my Model 657 in .41 Magnum, the 'tween cartridge.

For the record, there is a 4.2" 629 Classic on the EE at the moment, if that's what you're after....

Did you snap up the '4" but restricted' 657 that popped up not too long ago, TC?!

I miss my S&W 629 Stainless .
It was extremely accurate, I once put a round on the first attempted intentional shot at 25 yards into the open end of a spent 12 ga hull and punching out the primer base without touching the plastic hull!
incredibly accurate gun!!

44 just seems inherently accurate?

My 29 shoots like a laser bream with 44 spl loads.

Pistol weight perhaps?

Too bad you can't get one of these except on the used market. Absolutely love my 30 year old Dan Wesson .44 mag with the 10" barrel. From my metallic silhouette days.

The barrel on my DW was shorter, but if my gun was any indication, Dan Wesson built the most accurate .44 magnum revolvers on the market.
