I am thinking about hunting my black-powder season for the first time this year ... for deer.

Where I hunt the woods are thick and shots are mostly within 50 meters.
I like to to hunt with a SxS shotgun .... one barrel loaded with buckshot and the other with a slug.

And sometimes I feel like being the opportunistic hunter/stalker ... one barrel loaded with bird shot and the other with a slug ... and when a grouse or hare crosses my way .... I might take it with me.

Now, Pedersoli makes several SxS muzzle loader shotguns.

1.) Has anybody any experience with them? Are these Pedersolis worth the money?

2.) Has anybody experience with a good/accurate 12ga muzzle-loader slug or round ball load?

I have one of the pedersoli baker (plains) shotguns.(the one with the back hammer locks and single trigger )One thing about this gun I like is the single trigger as I use it more for rabbit hunting and the single trigger comes in handy when using gloves.it has an improved cyl barrel in the left barrel and modified in the other instead of screw in chokes. In use when both hammers are cocked it fires the left barrel first.I like this gun a lot and it is a good value for the money

OP - if you are going to use buckshot for deer hunting pattern the gun very carefully, and determine what the maximum effective range would be. 50m might be a loooong shot for buckshot from a muzzleloader. Same with a single projectile load. It is going to take quite a bit of testing to find out what works.

mooncoon - I have not yet heard what the Cdn msrp is for the flint double, or when it might be available.

I had one (my son has it now). It was well-regulated and quite accurate with Foster-type slugs. Never used buck in it. However, it was a very light shotgun and could be quite punishing with heavy loads.

I get good results with a .690 RB over 90 gr FF ,over powder card and wasp nest material under the ball and over it in my Pedersoli 12 ga. { it actualy measures as a 13 ga. cyl bore both barrels.}

Petew, thanks .... that was very helpful information. And now I understand why Pedersoli has a recommended load with a .695 round ball.

But now I am curious, what kind of accuracy do you get with that setup?

Bead sight, Bifocals, cataracts starting , and you ask for accuracy ?? LOL . I wouldn't shoot at a deer over 50 yards for sure. But I won't shoot over 70 with a Hawken either.

Thanks everyone for the replies and input.

So, I pulled the trigger on a Pedersoli SxS Slug muzzleloader in 12ga.
The gun has no chokes and is cylinder bore for both barrels. But it has a fixed, foldable rear sight. And it arrived yesterday .... :D

This is a very plain looking gun, but fit and finish is very good for what I am used to ... I can't complain.

I haven't decided yet on the round ball size .... I don't know yet if .715" round balls will fit. I have a mold for .690" round balls, and if the .715" balls are too tight, I might order a custom mold somewhere around .695" to .705" ... stay tuned, I will report back here with my findings.

Also, I tried to see if any of my shotshell wads would fit down the barrel but most are too tight.
One however, slides down the barrel easily ... the BP12 from Ballistic Products ... so I will be doing some pattern testing with that one in the spring.

And I have one issue, the gun did not come with sling swivels .... :-(
Anybody know where I can get the parts needed to install a sling swivel and that does not interfere with the ramrod?

Thanks,
Faustus

measure the barrel bores. My Pedersoli 12 is closer to a 13 ga. All hell won't let a 12 ga felt wad go in without tearing it in 2 pieces first , but 13 ga wads are perfect, and have the same resistance from the muzzle to the breech. 13's are readily available.

You might find that a patched .690 ball is a good fit. Pedersoli usually recommends a .010 patch .

Thanks Petew, ... because of your feedback and some other research that confirmed your assessment of "its more of a 13ga" ... I ordered some 13ga over powder nitro cards and 13ga .500 fiber wads .... and some lubed .010 patches.

With my digital calibers I get the following reading at the muzzle ....

Left barrel: .724"
Right barrel: .715"

So, I have this feeling the right barrel will be my slug/round ball barrel .... and the left one will be my buckshot barrel ...

A .715" round ball will probably be too tight for the right barrel ... there is no more room for the patch .... and a .690" ... seems a bit loose ... but we will see.

Once the snow is gone ... I will test some combinations ... and report back here with the results. Can't wait ...

It seems you don't have 2 cyl bores with those measurements .715 and .724 unless they are that measurement all the way down.

Hmmmmmmm ..... good point .... !! I just assumed they are cylinder bore.
Ok, I measured again and here the average from 6 measurements from each barrel:

Left barrel: .723"
Right barrel: .715"

I also gave the barrels a cleaning this morning and I can't feel a choke, however it seems the left barrel is a bit wider all the way down.
When I pass a tight cleaning patch down both barrels there is less resistance in the left one ..... or at least that is what it seems to me ...
