I am curious about why so many people say refinishing an old/collectable gun destroys it's value.

You see countless car shows about restoration where $10,000 barn muscle cars from the 60's are restored to $100,000+ showpieces.

How is a quality reblue job any different?

Why is it held to be such a sin to do a complete restoration to a classic Colt or S&W revolver?

Because it does. We are not philosophers, so don't much care about the 'why".

Because by restoring it the gun no longer shows what condition and therefore value it had naturally. Like a WWI 1911 in mint condition not refinished would be worth significantly more than one who's finish is highly worn and pitted.

From what I've been made to understand the Colt bluing of the 80s and earlier hasn't been available since then.
