New barrel help M14

Hello I recently purchased a norinco m305 got it all cleaned up rifle functions and shoots great, when cleaning the bore I noticed near the muzzle end it looks like on one of the lands that the chrome is flaking almost looks like light pitting. Assuming these barrels are chrome lined. There is not a lot of it so since the rifle shoot well I’m thinking I’m just going to continue to shoot it until I notice some sort of suffer in accuracy if it ever does get worse.

So my question is, where is a place I could potentially order a new barrel when the time comes? Wether it be factory or aftermarket?

Although plating will have a life of its own, you have a couple of choices.

First is to find a 12-ga shotshell and drill out the primer. That will centre your cleaning rod in the flash suppressor and not aggravate any damage to the crown of the muzzle.

Secondly, crack off the castle nut welds and recrown the muzzle itself. The chrome COULD be chipped by unknown forces, and just needs to be dressed back. Losing a 1/2" of bore won't effect your accuracy with milsurp ammo.

Third, change the barrel. That will be as expensive.

The flaking/pitting is actually closer to maybe 1.5-2 inches from the end of the muzzle
 
Sounds like a perfect candidate for a 18.5" chopped mod that many did before the manufacturer started making shorty versions. Benefit is that you can get it crowned better, threaded for more common flash suppressor types instead of a standard M14 castle nut affair.

I have an 18.6" Smith Enterprises Crazy Horse barrel as well as a Goodearth brake and USGI (Winchester) gas system that I would consider parting with. This would be a big upgrade for your M305. If you are interested send me a PM.

I believe the OP has already contacted me via email, but I’ll post a response here as well for the “collective”...

IMHO;
-flaking chrome on a new barrel is from improper preparation before the chrome was applied, it’s a manufacturing defect.
-I do not believe the flaking will be much of a problem, unless, accuracy is already poor.... by that I mean, if the rifle is acceptably accurate, I wouldn’t do anything untill accuracy or consistency falls off.

That said, I’m always ready and willing to help my customers spend their money (I’ve been called an enabler in the past and I wear the moniker like a badge of honour!). If the flaking chrome bothers you, and you think it makes a difference, then by all means drop me a line and I can hook you up!

I agree,shoot it until you really have issues. Save money in a jar for the barrel replacement in the future
