Hello, I've ordered a maccabee slr NR upper and lower. My challenge is that I have an 18inch barrel. The law says it has to be 18.5. So, if I pinned and welded my muzzle brake to the barrel, the barrel would then be longer than 18.5? My current brake is about an inch, so I've measured it at 19 inches. Given our ever so clear laws, would that work? Or should I just get a 20inch barrel and be done with it?

Not true. If a flash hider is integral to the barrel, ie one solid piece, than it can be included in the barrel length. Barrel is measured from the bolt face to the muzzle. You could back bore a barrel 6" and it would have no effect on overall length.

To the OP. You cannot pin and weld like they do in the US. Well, you could but it wouldn't change the length of the barrel.

Pinned and welded doesn't give any benefit in Canada. Either backbore an 18.5"+ barrel and machine an integral muzzle brake into it or live with a muzzle brake added to the 18.5" threaded barrel. If you need to hit 26" OAL on a short-barreled not-semi-auto-centerfire, you can thread on a muzzle device in the usual manner and use that length for OAL. Simply put, muzzle device does not count for barrel length but it does count for OAL of the firearm.

Ok makes sense. I never thought of muzzle devices that are simply milled into the barrel

I've never heard of back-boring before. What does that mean? Can it be done with an ar style of rifle?

The barrel manufacturer will bore out the end of the barrel so that the resulting diameter is a hair over bullet diameter. Then mill holes/slots in the barrel same as a traditional muzzle brake. Not much different than magnaporting a handgun barrel, actually. It can be done with any firearm. But the barrel isn't typically threaded anymore so you can't change muzzle devices. Personally, I just go with an unthreaded muzzle or stick a thread protector on it if it's already threaded. I don't have much need for flash hiders or muzzle brakes.

Many Canadian companies are starting to make 18.6" barrels. Might be worth your while to shop around. I know SJ Hardware and Canada Ammo are both on it.

Go with a 20” barrel with rifle length gas. Cheap, plentiful and shoot awesome with very little recoil impulse.
Not sure why there is an obsession to go with 18.6” barrels; you’re going to pay for it as a specialty.
Personally, I’d rather the extra money put into a quality 20” than a so-so 18.6” length. Ymmv

A 20" barrel is a bit much for 3-gun. 16 or 14.5 would be better... So I may just stick with a restricted for 3 gun and do the SLR into 22 valkyrie with a 20" barrel. Just thought I'd save myself a bit of cash as I have a 18 inch match barrel with probably 3/4 of its life left.

Sorry guys, I am a barrel snob. I like to shoot tight groups and compete in 3 gun and PRS matrches... Match barrels only for me. But thanks for the advice!!

Any match grade pencil barrel or lightweight options out there?

If you go to Maple Ridge Armoury's website they have a preorder for Match grade stainless 18.6" pencil profile barrels that will be produced soon. Might be worth taking a look at. I have one of their SPR contour fluted barrels and it is a very well made barrel. Canadian made too

Nothing wrong with Norinco's 20 inch hammer forged, chrome lined barrels, they're a much better barrel than most folks give them credit for.

Yep, if canam had any left with 1/9 twist I’d be all over one.
