New Sierra MatchKings

Found someone who has shot some of the 200's already.


I've shot about 100 of these this week in temps from 27°F to 52°F.

Using a .308win, Lapua Palma brass, 1:10 Twist, 30 inch barrel, .170 freebore thats grown a little. Base to tip 3.230 inches. Velocities between 2600 and 2660.

They'll shoot in my 10 but i'll probably order a 9 or 9.5.

Excuse my newbness here, but some of the guys are now saying that the ideal freebore for the 200's would be about .110 (not measured yet) but I thought that a longer bullet would have a bigger freebore. So I was thinking it would be something like the 208 eld-m, which seems to be around the .210ish. Thought I was getting a handle on some of this, but now everything I thought I kind of understood is tossed out the window. heh Does it have anything to do with the shortish bearing surface or the long sleekness to it?

Yes is has a lot to do with the shorter bearing surface and where the ogive is in relation to the base. The bullet being nose heavy, the ogive to tip is very long, so even though it being physically longer the 200.20x. More of the bullet ends up into the bore before it makes contact with the ogive. The same goes for the 200.20X (designed with a shorter bearing surface) it was designed for a "conventional" chamber meaning closer to SAMMI freebore. The US Team FTR chamber with the .170"FB was actually designed for the 200 Hybrids because of it's longer bearing. Here is a comparison on the left 185 Jugg seated 0.015" jump in a 95 Palma chamber FB. On the right a 200.20X seated at the lands with 0.110"FB.

Large rifle primer, one for the price more affordable that SRP, two I shoot in all types of weather from cold to hot so ignition could sometimes be a issue with SRP from what I've read. There are some pros and cons to both. If you're really interested in shooting a 200 with a high BC and short bearing surface consider KP Ballistics 200 Jack (only requires 1:10) and very accurate https://www.facebook.com/FclassCommunityChannel/posts/908273649337722.

Ahh cool thanks I never thought of the SRP being finicky in cold weather.

Now I know what the Jacks are when someone is brings it up, first Ive heard of em. Pretty pricey though.
 
I would like to shoot these new 230's out of my ultra instead of the 230 bergers Hybrids. My 10 twist has shot the bergers fine so far, but these with the higher BC entice me a little more!!
 
Hmmm.....I've got a spar .30 cal Lilja blank in 1-8 twist kicking around and a spare Remginton long-action receiver. Might have to build a 300 win mag for these heavy pills.

8 twist and 308 is no biggie as I have shot this for a couple of seasons.... having a bit more spin is much better then not enough.

PS, most will find the old boring 210gr MK to be far easier to set up and it doesn't care whether 10 or 9 or 8 twist.

^^^ I started with Matchkings 69g for my 223 recommended by Jerry and never found anything else shot better
 
Yeah Im planning on doing the whole season this year. I wanted to last year but I built an inclosed deck. That pretty much took all my time up and it was ALWAYS like 30+ degrees out last summer.

You planning on trying out the 90's this year there?


Well Im hoping these new match kings shoot good as the old ones. :D
