Saw it on sale locally for $10.00 for a box of 20 so I bound several boxes ( 5 ) But then had 3 right off the bat not fire, then chose another 5 from another box and they fired then back to the first box and 23 more would not fire. The thing that is odd is that the next 10-15 fired just fine and then 2 more failed. Serves me right for getting economical ammo!

That is not the norm for that ammo I found it had exceptional accuracy and not one dud . Did you try hitting them twice? What firearm are you using? It may have a harder primer than other ammo.

Yes I did try 2-3 times ( I had some federal .22 that acted the same ) I have it in a zastivia m85 mini mauser in .223 rem that i got from a member here. It had no issues shooting MFS 223 Remington 55 Grain FMJ, some reloaded ammo from 1996... Google shows that some other in Canada have had similar issues. It is quite accurate and I was able to sight the rifle in @ 200m but I am not at all sure I can trust it if I have a coyote in my sights.. Retailer is being a little less than helpful so far. But @ 10.00 a box Should I expect this?
Thank you for the reply

MSR means Modern Sporting Rifle, which means basically a AR-15. Your M85 may not like harder primers made for semi auto AR's. Try some match grade .223 and I bet every round goes bang for you. Stay away from anything marked as 5.56 and anything marked as MSR or AR 223 or AR 5.56.

What you say has merit but many of the rounds did fire, and the dealer assures me it is fine for that rifle as he has used it in the past with his bolt action rifles. I suppose I will just use it for plinking unless the dealer takes the ammo back. The bloke that owns the land where I shoot took a close look and commented on how the strikes are consistent and more then adequate to discharge the cartage. It maybe just a bad box ( I hope )

Looks like good primer strikes to me. There has to be something wrong with the primers used in that bath of ammo

I thought so as well. Next Wednesday I will go to the range again and see how it fares. I had hoped that it could be used on a few coyotes as well but my friend has some hand loads that are perfect for that task, he wants the skins for himself. Just can't trust it.

Those primers were wacked good . they should have gone off . if I was you and I didn't hear back from who you bought it off then I would email the source of the ammo . Federal . just tell them the facts. I would . and I would shoot the Coyotes in the head with FMJ . I have shot Groundhogs many years ago with FMJ and unless it was a head shot they did some dancing and it didn't turn me on. I made sure I used soft point after.

Indeed the strikes were solid, today a friend of mine took the rounds apart and noted that indeed the primers did not go off. Often times I do employ a head shot but if the coyotes positioning is not ideal I will take a heart lung shot. I have found it gets maybe 25-50 m before it expires. After they are shot they are usually in cover so I do not get to see the dance.

A quick update the shop I bought the defective ammo from did contact me, acknowledged the issue and gave me 3 boxes of American Eagle .223 REM 62gr FMJBT to try out. They did state that they had not heard of this issue before but relented when on Federals own site there are several posts of such issues. All in all I am very happy that they decided not to hide behind the excuse of it is the manufacturers fault not ours. So they gave me different ammo, did not ask for the defective ammo back and welcomed my continued business.
