I was getting ready to pack up for the Assiniboia show this weekend. I thought maayybbbeeee I could cull some of my military surplus rifles, you know, the ones I don't actually need. :p

Out of probably 150 or so various makes and models, I managed to scare up one Israeli Mauser in 7.62. One. I checked and found I have four of them. One I shoot occasionally, one is a nice laminate conversion, one is a matching FN made originally for the Israeli military, and another nice conversion.

So there you have it. I've officially downsized.:p. That'll be it for a while. (Of course, I haven't actually sold it yet. :p)
 
Well it is a start! The investment advisors often suggest selling any stocks you might have picked up that a) you don't remember why you bought in the first place, and b) aren't in your core portfolio. I had to decide there were guns in the locker that didn't belong there. Mostly because I didn't need another (whatever), but there it was sitting in the locker. The other hard choice (and some people won't understand), what is the central reason for the collection? Pick a theme(s) and be disciplined. Since putting a name to the core, I can ask myself if something meets that requirement, or not.
 
Downsize????? I've been trying to do the same as well. The problem is models and types seem to pop up that just need to be explored and shot.

Still numbers are slowly falling.

It will happen sooner or later when I only need a couple of safes.
 
I hear you. I do an annual scan of inventory usually, as you did, just before a show with a view to freeing up some space/funds for something else. It is rare that I am successful, though. Most recently, I selected and took to a show a Chilean Steyr M1912 in 7x57. Even while I had it out on the table, I kept looking at it and trying to decide if I should just take it home and put it back in the safe. It had a lovely tiger stripe stock and shot beautifully. In the end it sold at the show and I'm okay with that (mostly).

I have been buying guns since my early teens, about 1961ish. I have never really picked a theme, nor am I the least bit “disciplined “. I do mostly collect military surplus rifles, but have a “few” other types as well. Over the years, I have lucked upon a few gems, but haven’t really sold any of my “private” stock. I enjoy researching military rifles, and have been expanding on an informal database on rifles and related stuff. I use OneNote, a very versatile free software.

I enjoy CGN for the most part. There are many knowledgeable people on here, some I know personally. I try to not be to opinionated, as it can easily sour a thread. We have seen it happen many times. I would much rather hear what someone actually knows about a topic being discussed instead of the standard rant about Winchester 94’s aren’t worth near what they sell for, as an example.
