1/2 Challenge with iron sights.

Do peep sights count as "irons"? At what distance is the 1/2" challenge?

Yes, most definitely.

50 yards. 5 groups consisting of 5 shots each group. No other shots or groups on target paper. Each group under 1/2 inch.

There is a thread on here specifically for the challenge. I thought doing it with out a 24x or 40x power scope would be fun. I think someone has, im not sure.

I have got to 4 out of 5 with my BSA Martini Int'l Mk II but the fifth eludes me . . . mind you when #2, 3, or 4 is the stinker I quit there and start over.

Yes, some of the most time I spent at the range was when I was ammo testing for this with a scoped rifle.

Some of the most fun I spent was at the range printing small groups on a cool evening after work.

Reminiscing on that, I think it would be fun to find a bench gun and ammo capable of achieving the challenge. Then trying to do it with Iron sights/peep ect.

I plan to be giving it a go with the Walther KKJ-T I picked up late last year. It's not really a 1/2" gun, more of a 0.4"-0.7" gun, but I did manage 5 groups in the 0.3's and 0.4's using a scope and SK Std + one time. You know, one of those "got lucky" 1/2" challenge successes ;) Trouble with the other capable rifles I have is that a front sight cannot be mounted on the barrel. Maybe I just haven't found the right ammo for it yet, or it would respond well to pressure shimming the barrel, we'll see.

I don't recall anyone completing the challenge with irons or "peep" sights. There have been some who say they've used low powered scopes such as 2X7 or as high as 3X9. That is quite literally incredible shooting.

I think that the average aperture sights might not be enough. Like glass optics it may well be necessary to get top quality diopter and globe sights, and they are not inexpensive.

I used the Leupold rimfire EFR 3-9X from a proper bench, parallax adjusted (and with a 10/22 platform gun, for all the haters - LOL!). What I lacked in magnification, I made up for with targets centered on a grid pattern (big visibility help), and I was blessed with very nice weather conditions. I definitely tip my hat to the guys who shot the challenge with even less power than 9X!

Yea, I was originally saving to do a custom 10/22 build to hit the chal with. Over time I am slowly loosing interest with that idea.

Im guessing that I will have to do up a specific custom target sheet to maintain a constant sight picture more easily with diopter and globe sights.

It just sounds like fun. Really put my shooting to the test!

I'm thinking the A23 target is what I'm going to use for my attempts. Can fit 2 per page, so need to shoot 3 sheets for an entry unless you just adjust the sights between groups. PM me your email and I can forward you the target file. It'll be nice to do something that actually challenges my shooting abilities for a change, rather than my gunsmithing abilities

Here's the target, shot at 50 yards scoped, but offhand. You want a real challenge? Get off the bench ;) One could spend a lifetime refining their offhand technique, and never reach perfection, always something to strive for improving. Metallic silhouette targets make it fun too :d

lol!

Thanks PM sent.

Yah. I feel like minute of squirrel off hand at 50 yards isnt huge to brag about! lol

Ain't no brags about offhand shooting here! Haha. If'n anything, a demonstration of humility. While I roll my eyes at bench shooting and stick to my guns that it's all about tuning your rifle to shoot, when it comes to offhand I'll say it's 99.5% me, and I still gots lots to learn. I won the Ontario Provincials Single A Hunter Class Silhouette last year, but I really should have been competing in AA since I was shooting one rifle (my hunter rifle) the whole year in both classes at a AA level. I was 3 shots back from the Standard class AA winner, and I missed all 5 Turkeys on my final set of shooting for the round (fatigue!, plus... shoot turkeys first.... not last...)

Man.... Doesn't this just look like a great day spent at the range?? Know how to set your scope for 4 ranges with possibly 2 different rifles, 40m, 60m, 77m, and 100m, all offhand. 15 shots per bank. I've been happy to score around 30/60 after a season and a half of it, but there are shooters that attend who shoot 40+ (AAA/Master class...nobody gets perfect scores offhand....) It'd probably be about a 2.5-3 hr drive for you (kitchener/Waterloo area), but if you're interested in attending some matches in Ontario for the 2018 season, PM again and I'll pass along the match dates and locations to you once I know whats going on this year.

That sounds awesome. Even just to come scope one out and watch.

KW is only about an hour from me so not to bad at all!

That looks like a blast!

That does look inviting.... I'm around 1.5 hours. Is there somewhere to get information on this as far as classes and weight restrictions etc..
Scott...

That's some great shooting dryfire. Been thinking for a while now about getting a 22 target rifle. I've got a Williams rear peep site and Lyman front globe target sight, just don't a rifle suitable to mount them on. I have them on my bl22 now, but she's nowhere near accurate enough for proper use of the sights.
I've always liked shooting open sights for target and plinking. I had a Winchester model 75 target with redfield peep and front globe years ago, and stupidly sold it. Regretted ever since. It was more than capable of completing the challenge. That rifle was by far the most accurate 22 I had ever shot.

I remember at least one guy who did it in the original 1/2 inch challenge thread.

Its possible but like you said you need to find a good size for the target and the right apperture setup.

I'm not a great peep sight shooter but I was able to print good groups with my Tula MT12.
If I did it, many people in here can do it !
