Gorgeous pieces. Don't have any of my own, but I wouldn't mind collecting one or two... Know of any good sites where I could buy military swords? Preferably German or British.

I cannot recommend this guy highly enough.... http://lakesidetrader.com/ Not only super knowledgeable, but prices are fair! No gouging going on there. Picked up a couple of WWII Japanese dress sabres from him a few years back + dozens of medals & awards....

Of course there is some historical value but nothing like 16 th to 18th century folded blades made by famous makers. Those are now next to impossible to export as they are considered national treasures by Japan.

There are still places where you can buy them.

Here is a webpage that sells high end "stuff".

I personally have not order anything from it (yet) but I been following them for 6 or 7 years now (or longer). Swords from 1500,1600,etc go anywhere from 5k u.s to gazillion dollars. From what I seen, it all depends on traceable history and smiths signature (but this can gets very confusing)

They have email antique update that you can subscribe. Pictures and background history (when available) are top notch.

Even if are not planning on buying anything.

Cheers,

If they are military issue they are just carbon steel blades not folded.

Only some of the WW2 Japanese NCO swords and dress swords are plain carbon steel . Most of the other style swords (type 98 in this case) are made in many different ways: 1) some are family blades made in the traditional manner and mounted in military fittings (such as the bottom sword in initial photo). 2) some are made in small shops using carbon steel and heat treated to show hamon. 3) some are made in small shops using folded carbon steel (near traditional method but not making their own steel from ore) folded and heat treated.

It is an incorrect statement to say "if military they are just carbon steel and not folded." Here is a good site to learn about authentic Japanes swords, both traditional and gunto.....http://ww w.militaria.co.za/nmb/index.php (close up the w's )

Most of the tsukas are repro but the blades and half the tsubas are authentic and pre-1700

Some Chinese used similar looking swords and I don't know how you can distinguish them. I remember seeing a photo of two Chinese executioners in a 6 month binding of Harper's Illustrated, from the late 1800s. One person had a large broad sword that looked like a meat cleaver on steroids and the other had a long narrow sword that looked like a samurai sword

What is worse are the purpose made Chinese replica swords of Japanese military swords on ebay. The have almost perfected the fittings and brass of the true Japanese NCO and Type 98 swords. Thank God the blades are usually a far cry from a Japanese blade.
