I recently received this notice and it came from a reputable source so I ‘believe’ it to be genuine. If you know someone who may qualify would you pass the following note on to them please:

HELP US FIND WW2 VETERANS FOR FREE REMEMBRANCE TOURS
The Legion is on a mission to take all surviving WW2 veterans back to where they served.

The Royal British Legion wants to take all surviving veterans of the Second World War on a free Remembrance tour to where they served during their time in the Armed Forces.
Tours will take place throughout 2018 and will give WW2 veterans the chance to meet up with fellow veterans and pay their respects at battlefield sites, cemeteries and memorials. The Treasury is enabling these free tours to be funded by Libor fines, and will enable the veterans to return with a family member and carer.
Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said: “I’m delighted that we can continue to support those who want to return with The Royal British Legion to the countries where they served. We have committed over £5 million of Libor funds to help those who fought for our freedom to return to pay their respects and safeguard the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
HELP US FIND OUR VETS

No national database exists of WW2 veterans who are still alive today, so the Legion is asking the public to help us make sure every surviving veteran can take part. If you’re a grandchild, neighbour or carer and know someone who fought in WW2, please tell them about this opportunity and encourage them to sign up!

Completely agree! That was my first reaction and thats pretty much what I said to the chap that sent it to me: ‘cheap British Bxstxrds - wait until most have past on then offer the few guys remaining a pretty challenging tour!’ ... it sounds almost like a Monty Python skit - BUT in the chance there are a few who may be still with us and interested I felt I should pass it on....

(for what its worth there were no pensions or benefits for British vets - unless you served over 20 years ... a person could have joined up in 1939 and served through ‘Occupation’ and got SFA)

They should extend the invitation to the children of the veterans. We have heard stories from our parents but not all have seen where the stories happened. It gives more perspective.

Britain would have had more vets than we did because they had larger forces but even so there can't be many left. My father died a few months ago aged 88 and he was only 11 when he participated in the Battle of Britain (as a Luftwaffe bombing target.)

my mother was 19 and a WRAF - she served at Biggin Hill in the Ops centre. She died 2 years ago at 94. So you are correct - there wont be many.
