Hi there im looking at doing some work on my savage 111 300 win mag, my first step was going to be upgrading from my pencil barrel and a boyds stock, i was thinking about bedding it and a rifle basix trigger. Any idea where i can get a barrel? Ive been searching but still unsure of what to look for in a replacement barrel and i dont know what companies are reputable. Any advice would be great. Thanks

JC Custom Barrels Inc. Boutouche Bay NB. He does Savage prefits I have a couple of them and he makes a really nice accurate barrel for a very reasonable price. His barrels are a couple steps above Mcgowen or Shilen at the same price point.

r204, you have savage prefits from him? I am looking at rebarreling a savage tactical as well! how do yours shoot?

I have had 2 shilen prefits. first was a 26" bull barrel in 22-250 and shot amazing. and I have a 24 " heavy sorter in 7-08 which shoots adiquit. just under MOA. but I am still doing load development.

Also an new company out of Vancouver , International barrels, is offering prefits in select calibers. I am sure all will be within $50 of each other.

Yes I got a 223 Savage prefit barrel from him last summer. It shoots very well so far, I only really worked up one gopher load for so far using 40gr z-max bullets and H322. He makes a nice barrel and does a really nice job hand lapping as mine doesn't copper foul at all really. Here is a couple of pics of groups I shot last summer. This summer I will work up a load for bit heaver bullet (my barrel is a 1 in12 twist built for 100-300 yrd bench rest shooting and the gopher patch) I also have a Benchmark barrel chambered in 20Vartarg that is also a very nice accurate barrel and I would rate the JC custom barrel on par with it but $200 cheaper.
All groups in the pics are 5 shot groups at 100 yards
