Anyone use a bolt action for coyotes and deer? What bullet weight for coyotes. What make of rifle. I think a model seven would be just about perfect.

I have had two, both M77's, one an RSI and one an R... never shot a coyote with one, but did shoot a couple deer and my son took a dandy buck with the RSI. Always used Speer Hot-Cor 100 grain SP's, but now I would use the Nosler 115 BT Hunting bullet, which is what I use in my Roberts.

Depending on twist rate I'd use 75 gr Vmax for coyotes and 117 gr btsp interlock or sst for deer. That's what I use in my 25/06 and have taken some rather long shots. The bullets performed very well

Use 100gr Sierra SP or 100gr Partitions with a mag primer and a stiff dose of Win 760 in win brass, resized 22-250 is fine .

depends on the gun and what it likes but 90 grain speer bullets will get the job done .. When I first got a 25 caliber rifle ... I scoured the EE all the time and bought part boxes of anything I could get ahold off .. I should have had the throat checked first as this 257 roberts has a long throat and likes the 117 sst bullets .. I do shoot the speers too but the sst bullet are the most accuarate .. I am from ontario too and if you want I have some bullets here from trial and error LOL

Had an uncle that used the 250 savage for deer and now my cousin has it and it did and does work fantastic.
I use the 243 and the Roberts and the 250 will do whatever the two that I use will do.
A nice light bolt action with a 1 in 10 twist would be handy.
I am sure that Ruger at one time built the ultralight in 250. Hoyt would know.
I say go for it Gerald you won't be sorry.

Yup... they did....

They made both the .250 Savage and the .257 Roberts in the R, RL, and RSI.

After finding my previous bucket list rifles I only have a 250 Savage left on my list. I would love to find one in either a Ruger or a Savage 110 but, while it might be heresy, I just have no interest in a Savage 99 rifle. Winchester or Browning ever make one in that caliber? If anyone bumps into a Savage 110 barrel I am interested.

Gerald yes a model 7 would be perfect for a 250 Savage. Unfortunately Remington didn't make one so custom is your only option. I have a model 700 Classic in 250 Savage which is a short action and a 700 Classic in 257 Roberts which is a long action. In both I plink/target with 87gn Speer TNTs. The Savage I load 100gn Nosler ballistic tips and the Roberts I load 115gn Nosler ballistic tips and Remington cor lokt ultra bonded as hunting loads. Since my rifles are Remingtons they can handle max loads and shoot them well. The Roberts also has a long throat so I can seat the bullets out closer to the lands.

Well about 5 or 6 years ago savage did a special edition of the model 14 American in 250 savage, some sort of anniversary model I think? Really nice rifle with accutrigger, had Diane from P&D order me one and a few months later in it came. at the time I had heard on another forum that the Sierra 90gr bullet was an excellent choice for a 250 savage cartridge as grain for grain the post originator thought it to be a devestating bullet. Powder of choice was Winchester 760 some thing else I already had. load I settled on was with 38grains . grouped very nicely at 100 yards and recoil was very mild,an excellent choice for younger folk after their first deer. Or older folk looking for a light weight rifle to carry.....lol
To date only one young fellow has harvested and animal with this fine combination, but a 150 yards that 90gr bullet made mush out of mule deer lungs. FS

Thats's the catch.

From a practical standpoint, the 243 will do anything that the 250 will do. The EE is full of 243 stuff these days. Might have something to do with the current 6.5CM fad. Buying a 243 will make it a lot easier to find rifles, ammo and loading components but then some folks just want something different and the 250 will do that.

I have a nice accurate Savage 16 in .250 Ackley improved. I'm a big fan of the cartridge. I'd use 87 or 90-grain bullets for coyotes. Start with about 36 grains of Reloder 15 or Vihtavuori N140 and work up.
