Wondering if any of you gents have used this Partition built for the 30-30. I just ordered a box to try out, thought they might make a nice bear round. I know a cup and core will work just fine but wanted to check these out.

I picked up a box cheap at a gun show and loaded them up. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. Traditional cup & core work fine at .30-30 speeds, and I've never seen a .30-30 bullet come apart, so I don't see what you're gaining by going to a partition. Even shooting into old logs and digging the bullet out, they all stayed together.

I haven't had a chance to kill anything with the partition yet, but I really doubt I'll see any difference from using a Hornady, Core-Lokt, Speer, Sierra, etc.

Partitions work well in everything else so I don't see why they wouldn't work just fine in the 30-30. As mentioned above, they're plenty of bullet for the job, but I've never felt bad about using plenty of bullet before. It's a much better option than "not enough" bullet.

Using Hodgdon reloading info with LVR gives me roughly 2300fps mv and at 150yrds it gives me 1800fps. Assuming the Partition needs 1800fps to expand properly like the others that should give me a pretty good penetrating bullet within a reasonable distance. So at normal bear baiting distances it should be a great bullet.

Anyways, it's the winter and I need to find new things to tinker with. I also have a few hundred 170gr cast I want to mess around with as well.

Many years ago I did sort of a "penetration and expansion test" on several different types of handloaders bullets, using a .308 Ruger Carbine and cardboard milk cartons. The cartons were filled with water, and stacked in a line on a board. The bullet weights were 165 grain for the most part.

Three bullets gave a bit more penetration and expansion that MIGHT have made a difference. They were the Nosler, Speer Grand Slam and the Speer Hot Core. The Speer Hot Core gave penetration within three inches of the other two, but was at least HALF the price of the other two.

After that, I did not worry too much about a hunting bullet, and that little .308 took a lot of Elk, some Moose, and lots of big Western Deer.
