Hello shooters
Its time to start planning the 2018 ORA CQB season. Dates at this time are tentative, nothing is confirmed at this time. You should be on me email list if you are not already http://eepurl.com/bZ_ZJT

I am looking for some help with some things to keep CQB alive and well again this season. I have both a new job and a new child. I will try to be at every match but I will likely miss a few for work and I would still like shoot a few matches. We should have enough RSO qualified people to spread it out so everyone only needs to help at one or two matches, if we don't have enough volunteers I will cancel matches.

Staff Positions - are all remunerated $100 per day plus kilometers
  • Firing Point Officer to blow the whistle and keep time - experience shooting CQB required
  • Two Assistant Range Officers to help conduct the firing line - some experience shooting CQB required
  • Range Safety Officer - you can hold this an do any of the above roles, you must be on the Base's list of RSOs, you will be responsible for the range, you need to volunteer in advance so I can get you on the list. The list is limited in size.

Complimentary Positions - do not pay for a match fee
  • Stats officer - must have experience with excel/data entry
  • Quartermaster - bring match supplies to the next match, including target preparation, must be arranged 1 match in advance

Reminders
Registration for all matches will be in Practiscore instead of via email
Payment will be by EMT, no cash at the range. Payment is due 1 week before the match.
No refunds for cancellations in the week before the match.
Everyone set-ups, everyone cleans up. No showing up late, no leaving early, no ignoring the brass sweep, etc. Malingerers will be asked to leave and not return.

Rules changes
At the request of the ORA Council i have drafted a short rule book for CQB.
Some senior shooters are debating the merits of having different classes, or allowing or not allowing certain type of firearms/accessories. Details to follow in the thread below.
Digital copy of The Rulebook

Guests
As far as I know guests/non members are only able to participate in a single ORA event before they must become members. This will be enforced without exception.

Match Fee
$25

2018 Schedule
These are the dates I requested and are subject to approval/change by DND.
I am planing that Match 6 will be the championship BBQ. There will be additional costs for the BBQ.

Dates Confirmed May 13

Langemark Bay 4 0700-1800
CQB Clinic 1 March 24 - cancelled
CQB Clinic 2 March 25 - cancelled

CQB M1 April 14 - CANCELLED

CQB M3 June 9
CQB M4 July 7

The clinic dates are fast approaching and I have not received confirmation. I may request we delay them, but this may cause conflicts with other ORA/Service events. Details to follow in the thread below.

Registration will be on Practiscore. If you can be staff register as such on practiscore. I am NOT taking registration by email any more.
Standby on confirmation of dates and fees.

I wish each of you a safe and happy shooting season.

Oh yah! Getting the calendar warmed up. Hoping to attend a few this year.

Just a heads up though and not sure how many competitors this may affect but the Meaford Long Range Steel Challenge is currently schedule for Sept 7-9. Might be a few folks planning to attend that match. NSCC is also running the 10 weeks prior to that. Starting on August 30th to Sept 7th.

are there any plans to put on a clinic so we can be/help with RSO?

All experienced shooters are encouraged to volunteer for ARO duties, no special training or skills required.
As for the RSO (wears the armband, signs for the range, goes to the safety briefing at range control) I'd hoped to have a class on that during a clinic date. I am not optimistic about clinic dates at this time.

Initial round of answers to the survey are interesting. Not quite what I expected. That we are at 42 responses already is great feedback. I was expecting decisive outcomes, but I will likely go with simple majority preference in all cases. Just means I have to work harder for another win. Q2 may need to be revisited as the total number of Yes is about the same as the single No option. I'm going to let this run for a week or so to collect our first round of feedback.

I have been waiting to take a course for the last couple of years now. I don't know anything about CQB, but I want to learn. Not sure if I want to compete in matches, but you never know.

Langemark Range, CFB Borden.

Survey results are interesting. Opposition to optics on handguns, but not on rifles. An optic on a handgun makes sense for exactly the same reasons that an optic on a rifle makes sense.

For us old farts, an optic on a pistol is more important because our eyes cannot focus on a front sight any more. It improves accuracy, but slows down the first shot because it takes time to find the dot in the sight. On balance, it makes for a more satisfying shoot for me.

I don't think the rules should worry too much about equipment. CQB, more so than some shooting sports, is about 98% shooting ability and 2% equipment.

For guests/non-members, is the entry fee only $20 as well, or are they any additional fees? I acknowledge that a guest can only shoot one match before becoming a member.

If it’s the same as last year I believe guests had to pay $35 (or$40?) guest fee in addition to the $20 match fee.

The ORA sets the guest fee. I just collect it. I don't know if it will change this year. I should hope not. But it is in addition to the match fee.
I use the match fee to run the match. All guest fees fees are submitted to the ORA, and I get to use none of it for match expenses.
