Gday folks, just got my hands onto a Neck sizer for 303! you beauty!

I inted to reload for it right now, I previously dabbled with 170gr .308 projectiles, using a 308 die to load them.... we wont go there....
I'm moving onto Sierra pro hunters 150gr .311s and its in the Ruger number 1 So I understand the loading Data is low for the Army guns, but where do you rekon I start with AR2208 or perhaps AR2206H?? with a 150gr SP
I'm now using the rifle Scoped (2-7x33) an would want to use it out to 200meters more often than not.

I want to minimise wastin projectiles (I have 63) :D so I'm thinking of piking a charge an leaving it at that........... hmmm decisionsssss, Where to start and perhaps finish?

WL

I guess I mean to ask, would you expect to get accuracy from slower or faster charges??

how bad could the difference be between a min an a max group size? enough to matter at 200? on deer..

I worked up to 47.5 grains of CFE-223 and 42.5 grains of H4895 with Hornady 150 SP's in my No.1-A .303... can't help with the powders you list.

I found that using starting loads from a .308 Winchester was my best resource.

H4895 was my go to powder.

X2 Since the 308 and the 303 British had practically identical powder capacities, this works great in a strong action [Ruger #1, Ross, P14]
I found IMR 4320 worked very well, but Varget [AR2208] IMR4064 or H4895 [AR2206H] should work fine as well. EE.

Your cases will tell you how hot you can load, if you can get some Prvi Partizan cases you will be better off. The Prvi Partizan cases are .010 thicker in the base, have a larger base diameter and have thicker rims.

Both cases below were fired in my 1943 No.4 Enfield rifle, and the .303 British Prvi Partizan cases are made "heavy duty" compared to any other commercially made case.

Gday mate
fixed the numbers round for ya, varget is our 2208 :)

interesting about looking off the 308 data! I might just do this.

howdy.
I'm using mostly Highland /PPU brass stamped NNY an have some Remington brass for later too, no such cases like shown in picture, all are well mannered so far.

thanks

Thanks, WL, just got them written down backwards, lol. I have corrected the originals, too. EE.
FYI- I loaded 3 at 45gr which is in 308 territory but to eject the case was pretty stiff, even in the Ruger.......?

ill have to get a case length gauge for the 303 too but most these brass are once fired, neck sized... all roughly under 46mm so should not be a problem with that /pressure yet.

I Re loaded some at 40gr with AR2208- which is a middle of road load for the 303 data, on paper the 150grain Sierra is guna be around 2500fps........ which is fitting the bill nicely seeing as the 7mm08 is doin closer to 2700 with the 140, id like the 303 with 180s goin 2400 or so but a 150 will certainly do....

hope this shoots OK, then a Re sight and should be good!

R-P brass, Winchester WLR primers. 2 shot groups repeated 3 times(1/4 rib scope mount does weird things when warm)

Groups were satisfactory to very good. Worked up loads in 1/2 grain steps.

I think that's good Tip too, I will fire only 2 shot groups to determine a load as the rifle would be sufficient with open sights, but to have a scope on it just makes it more user friendly for most situations, as long as it goes close to the Aim point, ill be happy!

do you just use a standard Ruger ring for the 'rear' ring on the 1/4 rib? or a fancy stepped back ring

In my 1910 Ross, the 150 works best with Vihtavuori N540, with IMR 4320, 4064 and H4895 all being close.
I will not share the loads, since they would probably be different in your #1, but 2850+ is very reachable in
the Ross [26" McGowen] without any pressure signs at all, and they would be noticed with the straight pull
action, I'm sure. EE.
