A great day at the range today. Fire forming for myself, load development with my son and his 303br with flip up site, him hitting the gong with it at 300 (proud dad ;)) ... and 50 plus 308 Lapua range brass pick up!

Just finished taking a better look at them. Comparing the pick ups to some unfired Lapua on hand. Pick ups look like new, even the slight discoloration at the shoulder/necks from factory annealing is present. Primers aren't flattened and no cratering/volcano looking at the firing pin strikes.

I believe these to be once fired.

I don't know of any local retailers selling factory loaded Lapua and can't fathom a reloader not bringing these back with them. Having trouble wrapping my head around it actually. Maybe just a fortunate occurrence?

Some people just don't get it.

Last spring I gave a plastic 50 round box of 6.5x55 Lapua hand loads to a fellow about my age. Old enough to know better but one of those oblivious types. He came back to me two weeks later with the empty box but no brass. I had told him when he finished off the box and if his rifle liked the load to bring back the brass and I would load some more for him. He had a nice old M38 Swede that had been tastefully cut down and DTed. He showed me his targets and they were very good.

I asked him where the brass was. He drew a blank look and said I left it on the ground at the range. I told him I couldn't reload without the brass. He told me matter of fact style that it cost very little for components and I should just give him more. I told him to go to the LGS, pick up a 100 count of bullets, a 100 count of primers, a pound of powder and a bag of 50 cases. Then, come back and I'll show you how to load them. I haven't seen him since. He did however tell a mutual acquaintance that I suggested RE LOADING the same cases, which he was sure would BLOW UP his rifle.

There are a lot of people out there that won't re use fired cases. They just don't trust them.

There are also a lot of people with deep pockets that only shoot factory ammo and are satisfied with the accuracy they get.

I love range pick up brass. I always anneal it before use though.
 
Sounds like you've checked them over pretty good but I'd make sure they haven't been some ones practice resizers or neck turns . Before I could find Lapua 6.5 cm brass I would use range pick-up 308s to practice necking down and turning on . Some were good and some weren't so they got scrapped but I would always crush the necks flat before they went into the scrap bucket so no - one would make a mistake . Yours sound good though , I could never afford to practice with new Lapuas .

Maybe the local police were shooting the long rifles at the range. I’ve seen them come and shoot quick at the old range.

Gotta go about a week after snow begins to thaw, its a gold mine in early spring :D

Found lots of .308, .223, 6.5x55, 8x57, and occasionally .338 Lapua brass. Most of the time its been tossed in the buckets along the firing line. Some people have no idea what they're missing

Didn't consider that. Perhaps the dude was taking advantage of your generosity? Good on you for offering to teach him Bear after he purchased his own components. In my world, it would smart though...no deep pockets here. Sounds like he wouldn't buy you a coffee either.

These will be formed down to 7mm-08, I'll anneal before sizing, thanks for the thought.

Noted on the extra checks. I'll break out some tools and measure for something not obvious.

I started neck turning and annealing 1f federal brass from factory shot in our rifles. After sooner than expected failures with the Federal, suddenly Lapua became more affordable. That and PPU. Haven't looked back since.

Wow, wish I was so fortunate! Everyone at my local range collects their brass it seems. About the only thing you'll find of any value are 9mm casings and there are so many that I had to stop; was spending more time picking up cases than I was shooting.

...i used to do this

...now i know that the colossal misunderstanding of our time is the assumption that insight will work with people who are unmotivated to change

...now it's, 'find your own fishing hole, scout out your own game, and reload your own ammo'...figure it out on your own
 
If you find my Lapua .308 brass it would have been fired 20 times.
It would also look factory new and the necks would also be annealed.
The primer pockets would be hit and miss so that's what I would check first.

Typically I would crush the necks of any brass I thought was at the end of its usefull life.

Thanks for ensuring due diligence. I'll test fit some primers to see. If they are not useable the cases will get some hammer time.
