So I just impulse bought a defender 20 gauge with a 14 inch barrel and wood furniture. I figure I might carry it with me while fishing and berry picking.

I'm wondering if anyone makes a thug or brenneke style slug in the 20 gauge, and where you could get them.

Thanks

I shoot federal rifled slugs through my 20g as well as challenger rifled slugs
Great results with both. I would have no problem using both on big bears at close range

I bought a bunch of winchester foster style slugs today 3/4oz,looks like challengers are 7/8oz. Going to try to find some tomorrow, seems they are quiet a bit pricier. Iirc and they are the same as a 12 gauge this is a brenneke style slug?

Crappy tire usually has winchester super x for $5.50ish a box. I haven't found any cheaper 20 gauge slugs around here. Maybe online you can luck out.

^ I bought 4 boxes for around 22 bucks today.

Boxes of 5, not a bad deal considering what guys pay for a box of factory centerfire ammo. I reload for a few calibers where the projectiles cost a dollar, it's all about perspective I guess.

The challenger stuff is a bit pricey though it seems. Might grab a couple boxes, the 12 gauge ammo from them is apparently quite effective.

I will second the Winchester silver box slugs. Less than $6 a box and they shoot dead nuts at 50yds out of my 18" 20 ga. Only thing is I have removable chokes and for whatever reason the slugs pattern best on a full choke. Seeing as I reloaded a wack of #4 buck in 20ga it works out well for both buckshot and slugs.

.
Canadian Tire --- Today online --- Winchester 20 ga. rifled slugs at $5.79 for a box of 5.

Way back many years, in Southern Ontario, you had to use a shotgun for deer. As mentioned, most of us just took the duck gun with a full choked barrel. The ammunition makers made the slugs a bit smaller than barrel diameters.

So I've got enough 20 gauge winchester slugs for any army now. I picked up a box of challengers as well. I'm not 100% sure why because I don't really do the "bear gun" thing and I have better options than a 20 gauge. They appear to be casting the challengers out of pure silver because they were something in the neighborhood of 35 bucks for 10.

When the weather chills out a bit I will probably go try out the slugs, hopefully they work well. I am guessing the challengers will have better terminal performance from my experience with 12 gauge offerings.

I've heard these "defenders" are #2s or worse. Apparently they did not cut quality control - now bearing no big brand name - and have been modified to meet latest hypes in having a 14" barrel. Before spending more money on ammo for it I would see first if they can function.

How do you know we are talking about the same brand? Doesn't sound like it. There is a thread full of positive reviews on the board for it
