Storing/Transporting an AR15 in Pieces

Not in the restricted rifle game, but was curious as to the most compact storage and transport options for an AR.

Can the lower be stored as if restricted, while the upper can be treated as if NR?

How small can you really go, if space is of issue?

7.5 barrel upper seprerrated from a lower with small stock is a pretty small package. Yes the lower is the only thing that needs to be treated as a firearm there a guy at my range that transports his lower in a locked case with the upper separated. The only issue I see is that if your lower is registered with a ###X barrel length and then that's what your suppose to be transporting. I'm not a lawyer but thats just an observation of mine the keyboard lawyers will be all be along shortly to #### all over my post.
 
Just to add to what skoal said, you have 30 days to register any changes to barrel length, so if you switch uppers but still have the registered lentgh one at home i suppose you are ok. I may be wrong as this is just how i understand the law.
