musings on the Roberts

So much love, your making me blush.

100 gr flat base cup and core bullets and 45 or 46 gr IMR 4350 in the Ruger 77.
The Ruger does not seem to like boat tails.
75 gr Sierra HP and 49 gr 760 absolutly unbelievable in the Ruger, easy 2" and under at 250 yards.

117 gr round nose with 43 gr IMR 4350 in the BLR for deer in the country I hunt in.
The BLR being a short action has a longer throat than the Ruger long action and a shorter magazine, go figure.
The BLR likes the same 75 gr load but not as accurate.

I have some 115 partitions that I will be working with this spring and going to try 4451 and Superformance. Being a boat tail I'm not sure they will work all that well.

Remember to tread lightly with all listed loads.

Now this is useful info! I have only tried boat tails in mine - will have to break out some flat base bullets and give that a go! Thanks for the info,

Nathan

I have a push feed Model 70 243 that only likes one bullet, the Sierra 85 gr HPBT and it's not fussy about the powder.
That's just the way it is.

It's always good to see another Roberts fan.

I had a Win. m 70 featherweight push feed and for many years it was my primary deer rifle. i had the magazine, bolt stop and throat opened up to accept 3" LOA, and it loved 115-120 gr nosler partitions and IMR4350. And the Hornady 75gr. hp and IMR4064. And nothing else. Never could get 87 or 100 gr. bullets to shoot well in that rifle, not as it came from the factory and not after I modified it.

I use 50.0 grains of RL-19 with the 75 VM, but even though it was very accurate I pretty much stick with the 115 NBT, because I already shoot the 75 VM in my .243 and 6mm.

There seems to be a big variation between my Lymans 48th and the Hodgdon data. Lyman has a min of 42.5 and max of 47 H414 while hodgdon starts at 48 and max out at 52 both source using HP and reading very similar pressures?

David, have you tried other powders with the 75 VM?

Hoyt, H414 and BL-C2 is all I have on hand that will suit the Bob, may have to track some RL-19 down.

EDIT: Fing mail lady just dropped the delivery notice in my mail box and drove away, didn't even bother driving up the drivway.........

FF I tried IMR 4064, IMR 4350 and H 4350, when I tried 760 I was happy with the results and never tried anything else.

I have been working with the Enduron powders recently and really liking the results.
Will be working with the 257 again this spring.

Freddyfour you are in Brant County very close to Hummison Mfg they have more available powders and best prices you will find anywhere. Check out their web site.
By the way my Roberts loves IMR4350 45.5gns topped with 115gn Rem cor lokt ultra or NBT. I seat them out close to the rifling.

I'm on the other side but I do get most of my powder there.

More Musing

I knew I was destine to have a Roberts because before I bought my first rifle I had dies, bullets and brass on hand.
Bought my first 257 in 2004 a used BLR.
First time I took it to the range with some factory 117 loads and after sighting in, I was hooked.
That afternoon I dispatched a couple groundhogs with the same load and that was spectacular.
2 Deer and more groundhogs over the last few years, nice rifle if I do say myself.

My second 257 was a birthday present to myself, my Ruger 77 in July 2006. So far it has seen 505 rounds through it.

Currently planning on another 257 for my 65th birthday not sure what it will be but a Kimber or possibly a Cooper or maybe even a special build for me, a couple more years to go.

If I was loading for a 257 Roberts, of the 3 bullets you mentioned I'd go with the 100gr Partition. A fitting bullet for old Bob. For powders I'd be trying RL16, IMR 4831, Ramshot Hunter, Win 760 or H414, or H4350/IMR 4350

years ago I hunted with a man that had a model 98 (it may have been a G33/40 but at the time I didn't know about them) in 257 roberts. Either he or his brother worked with Epps and the rifle was made up there. It was beautiful with a wonderful polish and bluing - checkering on the bolt handle and in all the right places - and a very fancy stock and a barrel around 20” iirc. Had to have been 25 or more years ago but it has never left my memory as the perfect White tail rifle.

Thanks todd, i have most of these powders, I'll try 760 first, it seems to have been a good choice with many fellows in this thread

I am hoping that we have a new Roberts fan out there.

I just checked Epps website and they sold the Kimber 84M classic select they had in stock.
That is a really nice rifle, much the same as my 270 84L.
I know there are more fans of the 257 out there than you might think.
