Anyone that thinks they can come to Vancouver Island armed with a 223 and get all their shots at 75yds or less fill your boots. There's not much old growth timber left to hunt. It's mostly second growth timber, its thick and the terrain is steep, so its hard to hunt. It's usually wet here so you will get soaked to the ass here if you don't have good rain gear. Where I hunt there's a lot of logging slash where you can get some fairly long shots. The deer can be at the timber edge. Remember, a lot of the roads are gated here, so it can be hard to get access. There's old deactivated logging grades that you can hike on,and glass from. I hunt the mid island area. Taking head shots here is like anywhere else, it's not a wise choice. I've been hunting here over 30 yrs and my hunting partner has hunted here 55 yrs and he has shot more blacktail than anyone I know.
