Island Deer, what gun & caliber?

And dying from a gut shot because you missed is better... ?I dont like wasting meat on a 60lbs deer so I shoot it in the dome.

A miss is a miss doesn't matter where you shoot. Heck my longest Island deer kill was 75 yards...lol... If you cant hit something that close you might as well take up knitting.
The last deer I shot last Nov was at 200 yds.

Says the guy from Whitehorse, to the guy that lives on the Island?
You both have valid points, but the fella that lives there has actually shot a few?

I think Phil has plenty of experience shooting plenty of animals all over the world. Nothing special about island blacktails aside from their stature, which makes a head shot even riskier.

I wouldn't take a head shot that far, and thats about the max distance ill shoot any animal if im not 100% confident. Spring bear last year really tested my patience, all the buggers were 300+ yards out so I didnt take any shots.

Being 3-inches off on a lung shot is still a dead deer. Being 3-inches off on a head shot is wounded, & likely lost to suffer a slow death. I knew there was a reason I had you on ignore.

Who is off 3 inch at 75 yards and less ? Heck Ive seen bow hunters get deer that close...lol... At least im not trophy hunting... And I dont take shots like that when I dont feel comfortable in a clean kill.

Sure beats having to kill a downed deer a point blank because of a missed heart shot. Oh yes you guys dont miss I forgot... "Never a head shot unless he's on the ground to finish him off"

Anyone that thinks they can come to Vancouver Island armed with a 223 and get all their shots at 75yds or less fill your boots. There's not much old growth timber left to hunt. It's mostly second growth timber, its thick and the terrain is steep, so its hard to hunt. It's usually wet here so you will get soaked to the ass here if you don't have good rain gear. Where I hunt there's a lot of logging slash where you can get some fairly long shots. The deer can be at the timber edge. Remember, a lot of the roads are gated here, so it can be hard to get access. There's old deactivated logging grades that you can hike on,and glass from. I hunt the mid island area. Taking head shots here is like anywhere else, it's not a wise choice. I've been hunting here over 30 yrs and my hunting partner has hunted here 55 yrs and he has shot more blacktail than anyone I know.

i shot a few roe deer in my european life and there is no way i will shoot one in the head ... if you look up they can be even smaller and i shot them drive or stalk ...

Head shots are unreliably risky... deer jerk their heads around suddenly and often unpredictably, taking a head shot when a broadside lung shot is available flirts with being irresponsible (IMO). I have seen more woundings (on a "percentage taken" basis) with attempted headshots than any other shot.

Know of a guy who shot a rather large Black Tail deer on Sydny Island 30 years ago.
Went for the head shot at 60 guessed yards.
6 mm Remington.
Both parties heard the “ Thwack” and watched the deer drop.
Buddy one walks up and notices eyes closed ( mistake number two )
Buddy two who shot the deer pays no heed to the fact the eyes are closed ( mistake number three )
Buddy two flips deer over and pokes his gutting knife into the area in the deers neather region and then suddenly found himself being hurled through the air back about eight feet and ended up on his azz.
Buddy one is pissing himself laughing and watches the deer bound away.
Buddy two had two neatly spaced hoof prints in his chest, dew claws included.
Glenn, you post on CGN or just where the Sasquatch’s roam in BC?
Head shots are marginal but effective when executed.
Tight Groups,
Rob

It kind of is? It depends on how you like to fish?

If you shot it with an arrow with a string attached it might be comparable, but once you squeeze the trigger anything adequate and up is pretty much the same thing.

My dad used to shoot them with a 22 Hornet, but I wouldn't advise that.

I used a 243.
