First plinking 9mm: Smith and Wesson SDVE or Norinco NP29?

Again, thanks for all the replies. Especially those with first hand experience with either gun. Sounds like the SDVE is out for sure. I'm still leaning towards the NP29 as a first handgun to "play" with. I won't be sour if I burn $350 on a crappy gun as I likely could throw more money at it to have a decent shooter and still be under the price of most other 1911s on the market.

Though that Girsan MC28 for $400 has also piqued my interest, I wonder if I can find a better price? But really, that's one where I'd just pay a little more and get a used M&P range kit. I just need to find one to try. The local range that does rentals are stupid expensive. If anything I'll wait until I travel back to Edmonton and will go to the mall and pay my $80 and try all sorts of different 9mm.

highly likely that someone on here would be willing to let you try theirs out. A bit too far for you to meet me for a shoot or you could try mine.

NP 29 or NP 22 i enjoyed them both for a long time

Went to Cabela's last night. I held just about everything. Luckily it was dead so I had two, sometimes three folks helping me. In general, I preferred steel over polymer. I really like the feel of the CZs, Sigs and the 1911s. I felt the M&P pointed naturally, felt somewhat like an extension of my arm. It however didn't seem to fit my hand that well, I'd have to play with the adjustable back straps. And the grips felt cheap, but that can be fixed I'm sure. I didn't like the Beretta, doesn't fit my small-medium sized hands well, but I've shot one before and knew that going in. Glocks felt like Glocks. Again, shot one before and didn't like it as much as the Sigs and CZs.

I regretfully forgot to pick up a Walther PPX.

I decided for $330, I'd give the Norinco 1911 a shot (haha). Even if it becomes a safe queen, I won't mind as I've always wanted a 1911. It points nicely, the single stack grip fits my hands nicely, probably the most customizeable pistol on the planet. Put down my 95% deposit and started the Transfer and ATT process. Hopefully I can bring it home soon and clean it up, smooth it out and start doing some dry fire practice with some snap caps. Supposedly it's been taking about 2 weeks for the Manitoba CFO to approve full ATTs.

So new questions:
-Which Snap Caps do you like, and where do you buy?
-Which cleaner and lubricants do you use?
-Which 9mm ammunition is your favorite? (I'm not getting into reloading)

Thanks again everyone. Sorry if I frustrated any of you by being a typical Askhole (someone who asks for your opinion and largely does what they want anyways).

Now to start saving towards a CS Shadow!

To answer your questions
1. I don't use snap caps for dry firing or storage so no opinion here
2. I use Ed's red for a cleaner , any gun oil to lubricate trigger bow etc, and super lube grease for the slide to frame rails
3. I'd get bulk ammo from Canada ammo, Xreload, Budget Shooter Supply or other bulk source. ( Mine shows a small preference for 124gr bullets

Edit Check you tube on how to do a quick deburring of the pistol when you first take it apart to clean the Chinesium oils the pistol is packaged with, this will smooth it out and prevent some marks appearing on the slide. This took me 20 minutes.

I've watched a couple of the youtube videos. I have to either find the jewellers' polish or go pick some up.

Of the two choices, personally I like the NP29.... :)

I've got an older one.... Only mods I did to mine was ad an adjustable trigger & new grips. Otherwise, just great "as is"....

I think this is really personal preference. I would try to handle them see whether they fit and feels good with it. If you end up with a NP29, I have to let you know first, there is going to be lot of home work you need to do with it before it really can performance well in the range.

I did indeed pick up a NP29. I've polished the slide rails and everything seems good. I would like to replace the recoil spring plug/cap so I can take it down easier by hand. Anyone know if any standard 1911 cap will fit?
