Glock 19 Gen 5 Canadian or Glock 19X Canadian

Opinions not rooted in facts are worthless when discussing the merits of the design. The 19x serves almost no practical purpose.

All opinions are useless unless directly asked for. I'm guilty of that too, but the point remains the same.

Having read reviews from shooters better than I, the general consensus is that the 19X is a bit of a shooters gun. Slide tracks fast and flat, and the grip length gives added capacity (not in Canada) and makes manipulations easier than the 19. I think folks should reserve condemnation, unless they actually shoot the gun. As info, the PX4 storm has a G19 length slide and a full length grip and it shoots like a house on fire...

How things have changed. Not so long ago people complained about short barrel/slide guns saying that they had too much muzzle flip being so short and light. Then it was all about the long slides like a G34. The extra length/weight helps tame recoil and keep the muzzle down. Round and around we go it seems. More flavour of the week syndrome here. A 19 shoots no better or worse than a 17 or a 26 for that matter. Simple physics tells us that less weight means more recoil so the 19 does indeed have more recoil and arguably more muzzle flip than a 17. I personally cannot feel or see a difference between my 19's and 17's but what do I know..

Love the size of the 19 but hated the short grip. Pinky felt like it wasn’t on the grip. Like the 17 grip. So G19x for me and maybe a gen 5 17 after we get ones that have the frame beveled to match the slide.

In the meantime I have my Walther PPQ pistols which are all around excellent. The gen5 and g19x are the first Glocks I’ve even considered after owning PPQ pistols.

Your pinky is the weakest finger of the four and is providing nearly zero control or support. Don't forget the support hand that is providing a ton of support with it's three strongest fingers as well as the thumb. A dangling pinky isn't the most comfortable but it is far from detrimental to performance.

True, but the zero gain in performance with the 19x is hard fact. Fat chicks or skinny chicks is a personal preference and has no bearing on performance.

If you live in Canada short grips means nothing; who cares how it print inside your guncase! Full grip= more to hold on to. Glock 19's grip for me feels too short and uncomfortable. Sure there are people with smaller hands that like the grip, but for average size hands and up full grip wins.

Using that same logic the shorter slide means nothing in Canada. What are you gaining other than a shorter sight radius vs the 17?

A lot of Glock 17 mags also don’t fit without modifying the or the pistol.

I'm not looking at buying this for "performance". This isn't a duty pistol or competition pistol for me. It would be part of a personal collection. I enjoy shooting these on my days off. So a gun that is comfortable and offers all of the other benefits is in fact more suited for performance in my case. Plus if I don't like it or find it awkward/uncomfortable it's performance will be relegated to staying in the safe.

The pinky being the weakest finger etc... is a hard sell when looking at buying a personal hobby firearm. I'm not doing concealed carry (can't and again this isn't a work firearm) and I'm not competing. I'm enjoying shooting on my time off. So when the argument is it isn't the most comfortable but is far from detrimental to performance... well you just nailed why I won't buy one. I was set to buy a G19 until I actually held one. No thanks!

Let's also realize that guns like the Walther PPQ M2 or M1 Navy (I have both) offer a number of things over the Glock 19. Including one of the best pistol grips out there. So does the HK SFP9. Frankly even my el cheapo S&W SD9VE has a better pistol grip than the 19. I find the G19 length of slide balances better for me and just seems right. I like the G17 also but the overall balance of the gun just seems better with those that have G19 length slides. I also have some long slides due to longer sight radius which are fun to shoot but just don't feel as well balanced or handy. I used to be a lot less picky about that until I starting shooting the PPQ.

These things are subjective. But that's what's so great about not having to use issued gear and buying what you like. You can get what you want and prefer. Frankly I avoided buying a Glock even though I liked the G17 well enough. I bought a Walther PPQ and well it smoked the Glock for the hobby shooting I do. Far more accurate, way better trigger, balance was perfect and everything on it just seemed perfect. I ended up getting the M1 Navy, M2 Navy and the M2 5". Yes I like them that much. I've pretty much bought most of the plastic fantastic pistols before going to the Glock. However with the Gen 5 they peeked my interest again.

So.. now they come out with a G19X. All the benefits of the gen 5 and the G19 along with a pistol grip that doesn't suck. Performance might not be any better than a regular G19 gen5 but.. I'm more willing to shoot something that's comfortable and I actually like. Something I don't like is going to stay in the safe where it's performance will be how well it balances on the top shelf so I can put in other pistols that I might actually shoot around it.

Words of wisdom.

What we are talking about here with the 19X is a Commander sized Glock or an M&P FS if you want a comparison. Oddly enough I have been trying to get S&W to ship a M&P to Canada with the Compact grip and the 4.25``barrel. The gun would be perfect for IDPA CCP Division.

Epoxy 7 - your post is one of the best written reasons why most of us buy handguns. Thanks, that was a good read.

I'll be the jerk here.

Come on now, this is a gun forum not a confessional. LOL

Try shooting a Beretta Compact and you will develop an argument for the longer grip.

Take Care

Clearly, you've never woken up next to a fat chick after a serious night of drinking. Performance isn't just hurt, it's practically non existent.

Ahh to be 20 again.

Shooter Quotes to live by...

I avoided Glocks like the plague. Now I own 3. G17,G26, and a G20. Now I'm looking at getting the G19X just because. My wife still hates them all. Once you go SIG....

Bulls Eye in London are taking order for the new G19X. With the Canadian compliant 106mm barrel (Compared to the standard issue 102mm barrel. Does anyone know if the 106 Canadian version is the improved "GMB Glock Marksman barrel" or is it a standard Glock barrel for the Canadian market?

What?, no one mentions the FDE colour???:p, the problem here is just too many "gunfighters" LOL. I'm in all the way for a 19X :d

I currently own a G17 gen 5 and love it.
I have no interest in G19 gen 4 canadian, as i love the smooth grip front strap, as in no finger grooves.
When november/december 2018 comes and the 19X starts selling here, if i have spare gun income i am snagging one for sure.

Mostly for a range toy rather than a competition gun.

I know there are persons who lust for the original G19 but cannot own one due to the Liberal Party of Canada. (The Conservatives-in-name-only could have changed this unconstitutional provision but were too timid)

So Glock offered the G19 with the 106mm barrel. Not a fan. Short grip with barrel sticking out & that goofy maple leaf? Ugh.
Glock then hybridized the G17 & G19 for the US market and offered the new G19X to us. Retailers cant get them fast enough.

I really like the new G17 gen 5, but.....the G19X in FDE is going to be a big winner!!!
