Decided I want a 10/22

I see that you aren't interested in Ruger off the shelf; as one of the other posters said if you did go Ruger off the shelf then the Target model with the heavy barrel would be your best choice.

I'm making the assumption here that you are going to be using an optic, so if you don't want Ruger than a DAR with an integral rail is a great way to go. I prefer the heavier bull barrels with target chambers but they are heavier and tend to be front heavy. If you are weight sensitive maybe a lighter barrel for off hand might be better for you but it's a preference thing. I shoot a DAR with a KIDD bull barrel exclusively off hand in our local silhouette shoots and I don't mind it but others have picked it up and thought it was too heavy.

thats the fun thing about 10/22's is that you can tailor them to whatever you want to do.
i shall lead by example.

i have a normal 10/22 from 1984 that has over 100,000 rounds through it that has some tweaks to the guts but other that that its stock.

i have my bench shooting DAR with a 18.5" barrel and all Kidd internals.

i have my gopher gun which is another DAR but on a Blaster stock and a 8" barrel and all Kidd internals with a Timney Trigger

i should probably pick up a couple cheap knock off RIA's in case people come over to shoot and i dont want them to use my 'nice' 10/22's
RIA%201022%2060%208_zpstsiz6iqi.jpg

Ok I thought I had a lot of 10/22's....eight

I'm impressed and bow down to your greatness.

Silverfox...
Trigger replacement takes about 2 minutes. A Ruger bx trigger is a good upgrade. The kidd triggers are exceptional.
Wayupnorth...
Glad to see someone is more obsessed than I am.

I started with a Dlask and a KIDD ULW barrel. IMO, Dlask makes one of the best aluminum receivers (Dlask is 7075, as opposed to 6061 used in most others, including KIDD) out there. This one was not a "lightweight" build, but hits the scale at 5.9 pounds with EFR scope and a fully loaded mag. With an Axiom stock, it would be sub-5 pounds fully loaded and ready to shoot, with scope.

Essentially what I'm looking for. Not a fan of Houge over mould stocks in general.

I hear you, but great alternatives of comparable weight and cost are few and far between. X22 is nice but it's a half pound heavier and nearly twice the cost, same with pretty well any Boyd's stock.

How does it shoot?

Thanks! No idea on how it shoots! LOL I just got the Tandem Kross Twister in the mail earlier in the week, and the VQ extractor Thursday night. I'm still playing with smoothing the feed ramps on the mags too, but I'm hoping next weekend I'll be able to actually shoot it. Fingers crossed, it would be awesome to have a 1.25 pound bull barrel that actually shoots!

Ive never heard of the X ring until now, it seems like a decent rifle if you want a 1022 style gun.
Im thinking about a Dlask that a freind has available, its a nice shooting rifle.

If you're just going to shoot (say) gophers offhand, a stock basic 10-22 with a cheap Bushnell scope served me very well for a number of years. The only modification I did was to put a Clark custom trigger kit into it - from Brownells, and ground off the notch in the bolt catch so it would release when I pulled the bolt handle back.

Make sure the block holding the barrel on is tight, and the action is screwed to the stock properly and work on your hold and trigger control. A bog-standard 10-22 with moderately good ammo will outshoot most people.
