I also have a push feed model 70 in 257 .. but it was made into an A.I. before I it .. It also will not shoot 85 grain very well but shoots 117 grain SST real good .. does not like short bullets ,, It has a long throat but I always thought it was because it was made into 257 A.I.
 
A little project I have here with a lot of help from the generous members here on CGN.

I have some full Winchester boxes 87gr, 100 gr silvertips, 117gr.
Love to find some of the old CIL or Dominion boxes.

Well took the Bob out to the range last week. Looks like my 77 doesn't like the 75 grain with the h414 either. Worked up six different powder charges best I could do was 2 inch at a hundred yards. It definitely prefers the heavier bullets.
 
For 75gr my Ruger works best with Sierra 75 Flat base hollow points backed with 49gr 760.
5/8" groups at 100 and 2" groups at 250 yds.
Velocity at +/- 3400 fps.
As I have said before my 77 does not like boat tails.

FF what 75gr bullet are you using?

Try RL-19 with 75 VM's (work up from 45.0 grains)

Try H4885 with 75 VM's (work up from 42.0 grains)

Both work well in my 77's... but so does 760.

I will see if my local store has RL19 this week.

My book doesn't cover 120's bullets, any recommended loads?
 
Hoyt, you seem to be able to make BT's work in your Ruger.

I have just come up with some 115 Partitions.
Any thought on powder if you use them?
I am impressed with the new IMR Enduron powders and I have some info on Superformance as well.
Superformance is right around the 4831's and I have read that Hybrid 100V works well as well and it is a bit faster that the others.

I am using IMR4350 with 117gr Hornady RN in the BLR and it is what that rifle likes.

Try RL-19 and 760... I'm at 48.0 grains of RL-19 with the 115 NBT, but work up from 45.0.
 
This thread is just what I was looking for. I just bought an older style Ruger 77 in .257 Roberts. It has never been fired. Got dies and found brass and partial boxes of Nosler 120 partitions and 110 accubonds and some hot core 100s.
I guess I will spend some time reading this thread as it seems many are familiar with this round.
 
I found a load (160) of Factory Federal Premium 120 gr Nosler Partitions for £1/round (good price for decent ammo here). Shoots very nicely and haven't felt the need to start reloading as yet

Actually I already am a fan and I have been missing one for a very long time. I had one 40+ years ago and let it go as I have done with many other really good firearms.
IIRC, Hornady 100 grain spire points never let me down.

Well looks like winter is back for a few more weeks in Edmonton, think I'll try out some Win 760 loads with 100gr partitions and see how we make out.. FS
 
When and if the snow clears I will also try partitions and 100 grain TSX. I will go with IMR 4350 just because I have some.

Apparently there is a price on the groundhogs head.
Still to much at my buddy's farm to get to his long range, can only shoot at the short range pit.
