to takedown or not that is the question

New to shooting and hunting and I have decided on a 10/22 as my first purchase. I am very interested to hear from both sides of the argument pros and cons. Is the takedown model worth the extra coin? Is it as reliable? DO you carry your 22 all the time? WOuld you be more apt to carry it if it was broken down or is it too much trouble to put it together just a lot easier to have the regular model with you?

I am sure these are pretty green newb questions but since I don't have a ton of disposable cash I really want to get it right-ish on the first try.

I have several take down rifles. The only one i actually take down is my henry survival gun and my sxs guns if im traveling light. Otherwise i just leave them together

Love my 10/22 Takedown, carry it all the time on motorcycle.

Accuracy is more than acceptable for my uses , here is some 50 yard groups I shot a few months back.

Takedown takes all of 5 seconds at the very most, have had no negative affects on accuracy after setting the tensioner properly.
 
I've been pretty happy with my takedown, I get about the same size groups as Grove but at 25 yards using bulk ammo.

Grove, what ammo were you using? Nice shooting!

Luckily all of my .22's happily digest the same food.
 
I have 2 takedown 50th anniv units and a TD lite. Love them. Not as accurate as a target model but they arent really designed to be. They're so quick to assemble and disassemble and they always draw attention at the range. I'm selling one right now. I also highly recommend the Magpul X-22 stocks. I have the hunter and the backpacker and they're well built and handy as hell.

I primarily use CCI. I shoot bulk CCI AR Tactical. In my backpackers for backwoods use, I shoot stingers. Never had any problems with the ammo in my TDs.
 
Takedown rifles are very popular .... Ruger is even coming out with a 9mm takedown as well. Some people don’t like them as they are more expensive than a regular gun and they don’t see the need. I think it depends on where you live and how you imagine yourself using said rifle. A full sized firearm draws less attention in the country, but those in the city might want to be more discreet. Walking through the woods, I would assume you’d have a takedown already assembled anyways, but it sure is handy to have a takedown to stow away in a boat, on a quad, or maybe in a trailer or vehicle. Or you might want to keep it in a backpack out of the weather or whatever.
 
Love my TD 10/22. It fits perfectly under the rear driver's side seat in my wife's F-150. I won't be taking it to the Olympics, so whatever others may think of them, I think they are pretty neat. I have a cheap Tasco red dot on mine. :)
 
I really like my 10/22 takedown, it locks very solidly into place and have had no issues with it after 3000 rds. It's a great gun for being able to stow in the carry case and since it "takes down" cleaning is also easier.
 
The takedowns can be hard to find sometimes, so the resale value should be high too, if for some reason you wanted to sell.
 
I have both the Browning SA and the Ruger 10/22. If you have the bucks the Browning was better out of the box but it’s too pretty to toss under the truck seat. I had to tinker with the Ruger,polishing the receiver, changed the buffer and my trigger was not up to “my” par, but useable and with the takedown case it fit under my seat ,no worries about scratches . Bought the stainless one
 
the question you really need to ask yourself is what do YOU need a take down for.
99% of the time i dont need a TD for what im doing with a 22 so i have the full sized rifles.
but..... there are times when i could benefit from a TD so i did pick one up.
its the same gun, as far as i can get from accuracy.
so it all boils down to what needs are you trying to fill and will a TD fill those needs over a regular rifle.
 
To takedown of course!
All my non-TD 10/22s have gone down the road. The Magpul X22 backpacker version makes these TD models the handiest .22 on the planet...and yes I've owned a little Badger ;)

I guess what I really want to know is will I be more likely to carry my 22 if its a takedown? As stated I am brand new to hunting so I am not sure if most hunters take a 22 as well as a centerfire? if yes would a takedown be more or less convenient than a regular? If no would you be more apt to carry one if it was a TD? I hope that makes sense.
