30-06 is boring

Your're funny. In one sentence you are saying the 30/06 is boring, nothing special and ballistics similar to many other cartridges. Then you suggest getting rid of dozens of commercially available cartridges. Having only a handful of cartridges to choose from, now THAT would be boring, LOL!

I suggest you start a thread titled "The one gun hunter for the western hemisphere." Have fun.

It would be a short thread; 300 Win, done. I'm not suggesting that all the redundant calibers be eliminated because people should spend their money on whatever makes them happy. I'm saying it wouldn't make much difference. I should sell 50 or 60 of them one of these days.

Short thread? I doubt that. You picked 300 Win, someone else would choose the 7mm RM and not look back. Then someone else would come along and give you 10 reasons the .338 Win would be "best". Start a poll and have some fun. One gun, one cartridge, medium to large game, western hemisphere.

You can do all that with any of the bigger 30s too. Or; back them off a bit and duplicate the 30-06s in every way. It doesn't work the other way around.

But a 30-06 will do it in a light weight mountain rifle, like a factory built remington mountain rifle with a 22" barrel. The 300 win mag will be in a heavier rifle with a 24" or 26" barrel. You can make an argument for everything.

Lots of times they are in the same rifle. I've got magnums that weigh less that some of my standard calibers. Three of my 30-06s weigh more than my favorite .375.

I have been called boring as well... but I would still go with me ;)

I just got into handloading after all these years and am working up 150 and 168 gr TTSX rounds for my Tikka T3 Hunter in .30-06. I am entertained and excited to do so. You go with what entertains you. The beauty of living in the freer part of the world.

In the practical shooting world, boring is good. It's kind of like having an employee that sits quiety in his cubicle and does his work--they are often never heard, they never win any employee-of-the month awards, but they never cause any trouble!

Yes, but they can be a bit nasty in a light weight rifles and magnums need more than a 22" barrel, IMO. I would never own a heavy 30-06, wait a minute, I don't own a 30-06. :)

Any of you notice that the mother of all military rounds....50BMG , is a .30-06 that went through the McDonalds window and asked to be supersized? It is almost exact in its scale dimensions to my eye. I FRIGGING LOVE THE .30-06 by the way.

I have a 30 06 bolt that I have had for over 30 years, used to use it for moose hunting but moose tags are not available here much anymore. The 30 06 is not boring in my opinion as it is the benchmark caliber that all other calibers are measured against.

Okay, the .30/06 is boring, I get it; but compared to the .303 Brit, the '06 is exhilarating. Sure you can handload a .303 to equal of the .308 in an Enfield Mauser or a Ruger #1, but while more exciting than a .303, the .308 is less exciting, and less useful, than the .30/06, by virtue of it's reduced capacity. If you want an exciting .30 caliber rifle, the .30-378 might be worth exploring.
