What Optic to run on a Famae?

***Quick summary is I want a for-fun DMR wannabe rifle, specifics below. $600 preferred limit***

OK MBR Gunners, I've dipped my toes into the 7.62/308 semi world by buying a Famae sg 542. I agree with the general sentiment that the sights are adequate/not fantastic, and one should put some glass on top to really take advantage of it. I'm stuck on what optic to put on it. I hear good things about the Leupold Vx-1 as a no frills yet solid choice which folks put on their civilian M-14 variants down south. One gun store said to wait and see what the Bushnell Ar-308 will look like this year, and another suggested the Vortex Strike Eagle in 1-8.

What I want is something that can take advantage of the distance that 308 can go, but also do things up close. I'm by no means an F-Class shooter, and the Strike Eagle was about as far as stretching the budget I wanted to do (Roughly $600). I like the features it boasts, but I don't know if it's as good as it sounds. The Leupold seems like the safer bet (in regards to a proven name, and I know it will be quality for the price), but also a simpler one. No idea about the Bushnell. It seems to bridge the cap between the Vortex and the Leupold with some 'tactical' features. As for what I'd plan to do with it, for now just casually shoot stuff on the range. If I had a massive 4K budget I'd love an Elcan Specter, but so far the lottery hasn't been forthcoming...

Right now I'm leaning toward the Vortex because I already have a Rem 700 for actual hunting needs, so I wanted something a bit more fitting for a 308 Semi. A Battle Optic for a Battle Rifle. DMR on a budget if you will.

For those who have used either of the 3 or have something I haven't considered, what would those with experience recommend?

I have the SG540 and use a Vortex Diamondback HP 3-12x42 and it works great on the gun, used a aero precision mount and the scope clears the rear sight so I did not have to remove it

I run a vortex PST 2-10 now, before a primary arms 1-8.

Kind of like the 1-8 more now that I think about it.

Leupold has a mark AR that is in your price range and has mildot reticle and ballistic turrets.

Main issue is that your scope will be set really high up on the rifle..

Yes, I really noticed when 'trying on' scopes at the stores that the stock really was built for iron sights. I will either have to spend some more $ on the stock adapter to run the more modern styles, or rig one of those kydex cheek risers on. It amazes me how much more expensive a fun-gun can be.

Anyone used an ACOG?

I used TA-50C low mount on SG542 and standard mount TA-11F on SAN (identical ergos).

TA-50C works without cheekriser but blocks the diopter. Aperture in TA-11F mount allows to use irons without removing ACOG, but you will have to #### around with cheek-riser or accept chin-wield for ACOG.
