If you're just going to shoot (say) gophers offhand, a stock basic 10-22 with a cheap Bushnell scope served me very well for a number of years. The only modification I did was to put a Clark custom trigger kit into it - from Brownells, and ground off the notch in the bolt catch so it would release when I pulled the bolt handle back.
Make sure the block holding the barrel on is tight, and the action is screwed to the stock properly and work on your hold and trigger control. A bog-standard 10-22 with moderately good ammo will outshoot most people.
Respectively I would have to disagree. I have had 2 factory 10/22 and they both only could do baseball sized groups. Seen a few at the range. Their results were about what I was getting.
Sure that’s okay accuracy for shooting a drink can sized target offhand at 25yds. It really isn’t good enough for target practice or hunting chickens though. It is not hard to outshoot a factory 10/22. You could fire dead on a drink can at 50yds and still miss. Hitting a beer can at 50 yds offhand isn’t exceptional.
