I have a bunch of extra 90gr Hornady XTPs lounging about that I would like to turn into varmint slayers. Can anyone recommend me a high-performance 30-06 load using these bullets?

Those are pistol bullets designed for appx 1200fps. The 06 case is massively over capacity for this bullet, expecially with its construction. These bullets will start to separate from their jackets at high velocities. I've tried it. Velocities have to be kept below 1500fps. I used RL 7 in my loads from what I can remember. They also weren't very accurate and velocity dropped off very quickly.

I don't know what you call a "bunch" For some people that could be 20-50 bullets or several boxes.

Give the folks at Hornady a shout. They will likely have something for you.

Varmint slayers may be a bit of a stretch. Plinkers may well work, but those bullets will not make "high -performance" loads of any kind out of a .30-06 case.

i have tried this in 303 brit.with 100 gr. .312 speer hp. at max speed and they evaporate ,disintegrate,in less than 25 yards,
leaving a smoke trail.

Damn, that sucks. I have like 200 loaded into a failed 7.62x25 reloading adventure that I was gifted, and want to make use of the bullets. I was hoping I could be able to launch them at 3500 fps or more and use them against gophers or what-have-you.

I do not recommend this bullet for the 30-06. i have tried it and the accuracy was horrible. It will probably come apart at 30-06 velocities.

I realize you asked about a high performance load, so I just offer this as a possible solution to having bullets on hand. I shoot 93 gr Lee WW bullets out of my 30-30's with 5 gr. of Unique or 700X. They are okay for plinking at the indoor range. I did shoot gophers many years ago with that load, but I can't recall to what effect.
