I am not a Garand expert by any means, and I bought this rifle recently. I could not see the mounts in the picture nor was it described. Estate sale through a dealer. There were many to choose from.
I am a bit disappointed but before I jump to conclusions I need more information. The tag says "factory scope mounts". I have no idea what kind of scope would even mount to these things but the parkerized finish on them suggests it wasn't done in someone's backyard.
The rifle is otherwise in excellent condition. The barrel seems near new.
Who or what would have welded on these scope mounts? And for what purpose? Hunting? What mounts to them? Has this M1 Garand been butchered?

This looks like it was semi-bubba'd... I mean 'semi' since whomever did it has to properly align the two rails.

If it was done by a field unit/engineer because they needed scope mounts and the logistics chain couldn't get them soon enough, I'd totally see a material tech do this... so it might also be a legit semi-bubba job :)

But regardless of if it is legit or not, I would have paid less for a rifle with these compared to a stock one.

But again, if it works, it works!

I have heard the mounts were for a night vision sight.
Don't know if this is correct. If it is, I would leave it as is. If it was bubba at work, I would swap in another receiver.

Dang
bubba strikes again.....
Good grief
I guess I could send it to that fellow in Ontario who does fine work, swap in another receiver, or move it along.
What luck I have!

Well, did you buy it for show or go? I mean, if it holds a scope correctly, it's ok for a shooter.

It's an interesting piece... you could sell it for what you paid for it, to be fair; and look for another garand.

Found this while looking for this mod somewhere else (lol):

I bought it to shoot. And with the beautiful barrel it has it should shoot well.
What kind of scope attaches to these mounts? Some kind of rail?

Oh God....hahahaha!

I kind of wanted a Garand that looks like it should.

This is one of the Garands that the Danes modified for the installation of night vision sights. The welded on mounts look unsightly but they do not affect safety or functionality.

I bought one of these receivers, complete with rail between the 2 welded on brackets, about 16 yrs ago and have been hoping to find a Danish surplus night vision sight, but no luck to this point.

Well, I don't shoot at night so the night vision thing is wasted on me. It's nice to know that it's not some bubba job so thanks for the replies.
I suppose those holes are an exact distance apart for some obscure rail.
Would there be any type of rail that would bolt onto those mounts and allow the fitting of nice vintage scope?

Hard to say what would fit. You might be able to mount a picatinny rail to it and use a more modern scope
Is that one of the Garands from the Wanstalls sale? I got a Springfield from them and the barrel is in really nice shape too but the wood on mine is pretty beat up
Will have to try to find some new wood for it sometime

Yes from that big bunch of used guns that was supposed to be an estate sale.
The pic of my rifle had a sling and was lying on the left side, with the bottom showing. No sling though. I think they should have put the mounts in the description.
There is probably some guy out there with his night vision equipment that missed out.

I didn't get a sling with mine either, or any endbloc clips
Yeah they should have had better descriptions of the guns and more pictures
I'm happy with what I ended up with, according to the serial number it's an early 1942 model so has probably seen some action
You never know one day you might find the proper scope and mount for it
Give Corwin Arms a shout, they seem to be able to get some uncommon items

Can,t you cut the welds and flap wheel smooth where that mount was ? No offense but the L shaped mounts do not do much in the looks department for that rifle.

Cheaper to swap everything over to a new Italian receiver then to try and clean it up...Tac Teacher could do it at one of the clinics.
A Smith would do it cheap likely too...99% chance it will index and headspace without any additional work needed.

I just bought a receiver off of the ee just because it had the brackets welded on. I thought it may have been a bubba job but I do like that it's for something different

I'm a mechanic and I own 3 welders and fabricate a fair bit.
Yes the welds could be cut off and smoothed. But it would also need bead blasting, which I can also do.
But the parkerized finish is not something I can do. And I'd like it to be close to the rest of the rifle if possible.
