SKS question

I just bought a normal SKS. I was thinking of buying another SKS that has been converted to look a little like an AR-15 basically. Remove the wood furniture and add plastic and a hand grip etc. What is the deal? One of the brands is TAPCO. Are these conversions worth while? I don't want a freak for a gun. Honestly I'm basically buying the guns incase Trudeau bans (prohibs.) all semi-autos.

Not crazy at all, tapco conversions are pretty much the rifle equivalent of cut coils and a wing on a Honda civic.

Check the Red Rifle forum, there's probably 50 threads on subject, some of them have a good idea or three.

Yes and usually they ask the cost of the sks, the crapco gear and a 10% surcharge!! Just buy the sks and play with it, then if you wanna play mall ninja, go ahead and bubba the rifle!
 
Kodiak has the best SKS conversions: SKS-KD which accepts AK mags or SKS-15 which accepts AR mags (and 10 round XCR pistol mags too).

None of the SKS conversions are better than original Simonov's design though.

Good point, if you are hell bent to change the rifle, at least use a quality kit, not cheap plastic junk!
 
I keep my SKS the way Simonov intended. Except for one.
It's got the Archangel Opfor stock, Harris bipod, HiCal AR mag adapter, Tech Sight TS200 rear peep, and Witt Machine muzzle brake.
Fire for effect!
 
The SKS I bought has the TS200 sight.

The vendor said he checked (verified) my FAC. I didn't think that was necessary. I don't think any other vendor has done this. The SKS isn't restricted is it?

The vendor phoned the CFO or Miramichi to verify your PAL? Not necessary with non-restricted such as the SKS, but some places do it anyway.

^this. Personally, I don't care for any of the add-on/aftermarket stocks...they all look junky to me, and AR-wannabe-ish. To each, their own though. If you dig it, go for it. I'll also add~there are a few appealing SKS options if you're hell-bent on spending more money. For me, from the top down..

1. Yugo SKS in grenade launcher configuration :)
2. SKS-D...having factory-detachable AK mags would be pretty sweet!
3. Hi-Cal conversion to take LAR pistol mags
 
The SKS is perfect as is. It’s a compact carbine style rifle that handles well in the bush. Adding after market kits to it just adds cost, makes it unwieldy and doesn’t actually change or improve anything. The worst feature of an SKS, IMO, is the safety lever by the trigger and no kit will address that issue.

And most kits, afaik, makes the takedown more complicated.

If you want a fancy Chicom x39 shooter, get a VZ or T81.
 
Before you hack up a perfectly good SKS I would compare the price of a mint condition Lee Enfield to a cut-down sporterized Lee Enfield. The SKS is an iconic piece of Cold War history IMO. I would consider keeping one in original condition. If you really want a tactical one, it might be worth buying a second one that somebody else added all the bells and whistles to.

^. If I ever get another one, I'm keeping my last-year 1958 non-refurb all matching red laminate, stock :) The other one would be for experimenting with lighter materials, etc.

I want to see what I can do to shave the mag to an internal 5 round version, like a garand, amongst other things :)

I ask for a picture of the pal/rpal if they don't want to sendcthat then I call the centre and verify that the pal is valid and the name is correct, they don't know and don't ask what transaction is going on! It is just a confirmation of valid pal and name!
 
Well I took the crazy step of buying a Russian and a Chinese SKS. I did this prior to Monday which "may be" the date the Liberals grab all our guns.

The guys I bought the Chinese SKS have like 22 Chinese SKS and lots of Russian ones as well. I can't hot link but they are thegundealer dot net on the search bar at their site type in SKS. Good guys in McAdam N.B.
 
Hmmm, I have a Tapco stock on my sks and I also have the numbers matching wood stock. Can't I just switch it back when ever I want? Meanwhile, I have a cool looking plinker. WTF is wrong with that???
