Your Favourite Ruger No1 Cal?

Ruger has produced #1RSI in .257 Roberts, 6.5x55 and of course 7x57.

Barrel contour is too small for anything much above .308 .

Highly unlikely they would chamber .356 Winchester in a 1A, but it's quite possible in .358 Winchester.

You never know, with #1 prices now north of $2000.00 in Canada, the market here is shrinking.

I got a #1B that's been in my safe for quite a few years now. I've never used it. It has pretty nice wood on it, but it's chambered in what some would consider boring, 270 win. I picked it up in a trade years ago, it's barely been fired.

God that e.e sale is tempting, a few calibers on the wish list and the 50 ak is something I've always wanted to play with in a single shot platform. So impractical though, even if it is a good deal.

I jumped on the .405 Win... been looking for one since I sold mine back in 2010... I was thrilled to see it listed. Took all of two hours to source dies, brass and bullets. Good to go... will see how flopheads react to a 370 grain @ 2000... which is about where I loaded my .45/70... this is just cooler.

I wasn't suggesting Ruger would do it, I was suggesting that I will do it... from a functional perspective the .356 makes more sense than the .358... but certainly not from the component perspective, but I just happen to have dies and 300 .356 brass languishing in my shop...

The .405 Winchester is one of the cooler chamberings in a No.1 rifle. It's a No.1-H with a 24" barrel?

Mystified what a flophead is. Googled the term and closest match is this -

No.1-H with 24" barrel from the 2004 run.
Flophead = local term (and elsewhere) for WT doe.
Late season doe tags to fill the freezer.

(Photobucket struck again and messed up my previous post ).

I have 45-70, 7.62x39 and 9.3x74R. Nicely balanced with light and medium barrels. I'm certain I have all the No.1's I want...I think. :p

I have streamlined down to five;

No.1-A 7X57
No.1-A .303 Brit
No.1-A .35 Whelen
No.1-H .405 Win
No.1-H .450/400 NE 3"

But now that I picked up the .405, the NE will probably hit the bricks.

Decent accuracy. Very interesting round to handload in a No.1 rifle. Here's a 3 shot group off the bench at 100 meters with .308 170gr NP's at 2065 fps muzzle speed. Tighter groups with .310 bullets.

The stainless 45-70 was the one tempting me. If it was indeed the same one a member from the Yukon listed years ago it was pretty neat. If I remember all the details right, the barrel was shortened to roughly 18” front sight reinstalled, wood checkered, necg forend escutcheon fitted, and throated for 400gr bullets.
