Found this from 1960 (this is British Columbia)

"All wild-sheep ranges in the Province were baited rather heavily to reduce predation losses to a minimum, and the majority of the heavily hunted deer ranges also received attention. Much of the moose winter range was baited as it is adjacent
to domestic-stock range and controls were in heavy demand by ranchers."

No, they were culling from helicopters last winter and have for the last several years, likely are this winter too but I’m out of that loop presently. It just doesn’t hit the news much, but Myley Cyrus knew about it so not a huge secret. BC still have a wolf cull program, helicopter based, as does Alberta. Both are focused primarily on Woodland Caribou conservation. It confuses me a bit folks don’t read the news but comment aggressively on the subject.

The last government wolf kill in BC was back in the 80’s from Helocopters.
Shot gun and an AR to do the dirty work after running them down in the deeper snow pack.
Calling Bruce L. Where are you?

Rob

As I remember they had a program back then, they were catching wolves, taking them to a central location and sterilizing them. One of those bright boy from the university ideas. cost, in those days, was 1500. per animal.

Really? On this forum (and most others, it seems to me) one should expect that to be the norm.

Some RMs still give bounties for coyotes and beavers, that's about it...

Side note, getting free $$$ to shoot beavers, keep the pelt, keep the carcass for bear bait and turn in the tail to the RM!!! Now that is a great deal!!!

Sorry I don't subscribe to the Dawson Creek Mirror.

Typical gov't, were it legal I'd definitely pay to do a helicopter wolf shoot, saving the taxpayer money.

Well maybe our resident clip and paste expert TDM could oblige us with his talent on the topic at hand.
Bruce aka H4350 has some first hand knowledge on the original question, but as of yet he hasnt weighed in on this topic.

No, watching the CBC before bed is not a good practice. 84 wolves is a bandaid for the caribou, too little, too late. Compare that to "all sheep ranges"

assuming 1080?

proberly about that time they realised scientifically that theres a whooole lotta by kills from the stuff?

They mainly used strychnine and cyanide in my area in the 80's and 90's. 1080 was used further out west. Some still use carbofuran, but it's illegal to use and also has a lot of by-kills as well. "Cyanide guns" were pretty effective, though they did kill some bears with them. Also liver laced with strychnine crystals in the winter got rid of many wolves.
