Deer Hunting Calibers in ONT

Sorry, I should have been more specific.

I hunt deer in WMU-56 where rifle hunting is permitted;
I've been using a scoped .308 for many years, but want something in a bush gun that's lighter, more compact and hits hard inside of 100yds.

I just wanted to know from a regulation perspective if the .44 mag is permitted in Ontario for deer.

Any center-fire caliber as per the hunting regs.

7X57 is my favourite Ontario deer cartridge... I have taken several deer with various .44 RM's too... a really nice Win 94 and a couple Ruger's, M77/44 and Deerfield Carbine.

7x57 is hard to beat for any cervid smaller than an elk... what a wonderful cartridge.

Anything from 22 hornet to 20mm. Even fmj. (Not that you should)

The 7mm Mauser is perfect for deer hunting and a lot more versatile than a 44mag. As good as the 44 is, it would be a drag to see a nice buck across a big clear cut and only have a 44 in hand.

Any number of simular could be added to either side of this scenario.

As others have stated the .275 calibre restriction is for small game. The OP is asking about deer.

44 is a wonderful short range cartridge for deer. I dare say under 100m it might be the best. You can literally "eat to the hole" as there is almost no damage besides a nice thumb sized exit hole. None of the bloodshot, jellied damage that the rifle cartridges make.

My personal favorite is the 6.5mm x 55mm Swed, not to much or to little at any range! I use 129 gr. bullets....only need one well placed shot.
Taken 20 plus deer with this round.
