I completely new to the AR world... I've just bought a M&P 15 sport 2 and I've been reading a lot about the AR in general. Especially about the DI gas system and how the carbine lenght system was designed to work well on a 14.5 inch barrel and not on a 16 inch barrel. I know that most AR's have 16in barrels to comply with US laws, but since it is restricted here anyway, I've been contemplating changing my sport 2's barrel to a 14.5 inch model.

Where can I buy that, there must be some ''go to'' site sponsors for that kind of need? And what should I look for in a ne barrel? Material types, twist rate, etc?

NEA makes descent quality barrels for good prices. SFRC is where i buy all my stuff and i think canada ammo stocks them as well. Twist rate doesn't matter too much as long and you are shooting stand weights i.e 55 gr and 62 gr. The slower twist barrels are generally for higher bullet weights. I have 1-7 and 1-9 twists in my ar's and don't notice any difference in accuracy when using standard bullet weights.

If you really want to by all means, but the difference will be so negligible that you likely won't even notice a difference.

Words of advice, don't cheap out on the barrel. After all it is the most critical part, and a cheap garbage barrel will in most cases yield crappy results. If you're going to swap barrels, get something that will actually make a difference.

If that the only reason you have for swapping out the barrel, I'd say, save your money and put it towards a short barrel upper build instead.

You meant to say the faster twist rates are for the heavier bullets. Agreed, 1-7/1-8/1-9 all work well. I had a couple NEA barrels and they were pretty decent indeed.
