I counted over 70 hits between the three of us... and I swear I hit it with the M1 carbine there is one little baby mark near the center.... only like 30 feet of hold over with a red dot aiming at the top of the tree... 1 hit out of 20 rounds....

Is there any federal / provincial regulations on shooting near powerlines? Ive done some research but it seems to be a gray area when the topic is discussed.

I have a spot in Northen Ontario for long-range work, however its quite the hike in and out. Power lines in my district with road access seems much better :roll eyes:

If anyone can point me in the direction to find out the legalities, it would be much appreciated.

First off I'm not sure how local le would feel about it, and they may keep a close eye on that kind of infrastructure these days, but there's numerous power line cuts that run through very isolated spots.

Get on Google Earth and check out the main power line corridors for the opportunity to shoot over 1000m. I'm not sure about west of Hwy 35, but between it and Haliburton is a main corridor that runs from just south of Minden, all the way to the Ottawa Valley. You can access it from Hwy 118 just east of West Guilford, and Hwy 127 near Whitney. If you have a sled or ATV even better as I'm sure it wouldn't take long to get to a spot where there is no one to bother. There is plenty of small corridors that follow access roads or cut cross country for short distances, but frequently more than 1km. I have one right behind my house, max range from good firing position to furthest solid back stop is 973m according to Google maps. There's a few reasons I don't use it but I have other spots I can shoot to about 300m. There's also a few corridors off Hwy 62 north of Hwy 7 and at least one of them also runs across Hwy 41 (for those in the Kingston/Belleville/Trenton area, lots of options with all the farms/open private property North/South of Hwy 7 though).

Using Google earth is great because you can see camps and cottages that you can't see from the ground. It'll save you from dealing with some guy who thinks your bullet is going to magically ricochet around, or bore through 500m of rock and forest. If you're far enough away from people and pick up everything I'm sure you won't be bothered.

Here's an example. https://www.google.ca/maps/@45.1599444,-78.5029032,3931m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

I'm also in Sudbury and have scouted out a few locations. Biggest issue is that Vale and Xtrada have leases on basically all the land for miles around the Sudbury area well beyond all the outskirts as well. You really need to overlay google maps with the Ontario crown land maps. There isn't much crown land that isn't under lease to the mines.

Send me a PM and we can chat and compare notes. I have a few areas I scouted out and plan on going on location to see them for myself. It would be good to get together with some fellow long range shooters as well.

Bringing this thread back from the dead.

Finally got some trigger time at Tactical Teacher's (Barney's) clinic in Petawawa over the weekend and ready to get some more trigger time!!!

Have you considered calling HydroOne and asking about shooting under their power lines?

Sometimes it is private land, sometimes it is crown land. It is a legal right-of-way.
Did some research on Hydro's website a while back. Reference was made to other uses, users. It just isn't crown land where anyone can do whatever he chooses.
I suspect that Hydro would be really nervous about shot up insulators. Not that anyone here would do that, but Hydro doesn't know.
Hydro has regional offices. Just pick up a phone and ask.

There are 2, I use off 62 one at Bannockburn, use the rail trail to get at, the other south of Jordan Lake accessible off 62 on the west, off the rail trail on the east.
I use them for over 300 yards and have got a few coyotes there as well. They are nice because you can set up on the top of one hill and put your targets at the bottom of another and have very good sight lines.
For under 300 or just plinking I use the crown land on our road.

Any suggestions on local clubs in the area accepting new members? I’m in Barrie.

A know a few friends able to get in at the Barrie District Hunters and Anglers Club (BDHAC), but there are some hoops to jump through to get sponsored.

Barrie Gun Club has a wait list, Orillia Gun Club has a wait list (might be able to get sponsored in though).

If you're willing to travel... Sundridge has Eagle Lake Gun Club available.

Any guys looking to get out and go for a shoot anytime soon?
Got a couple new AR500 targets to put some marks on, and wanting to prep up before Tactical Teachers next go (and here's hoping he gets some CFB Borden matches going)

Hey koesdibyo.
I may have some time to go for long range and could use some more trigger time on my 7mm-08. The ORG 200 yard range should be open soon and they may be working on a 300. I will inquire next time I go up.
Let me know when and where and I’ll see if I can make the getaway for a day.

Thanks,
Roy

Sounds good. I'll be spending the rest of today and some time tomorrow afternoon scouting some hydroline cuts on the Coldwater area based of some google mapping.
