Just looking for options for beater rifle for packing around as a truck/quad/Bush gun. Something you can take out scouting or leave it rattle around in the 4x4 while out and about. Or pack along for a fishing trip for bear deterrent. Or pack into a bait site to restock it...

I was looking at Tradex with the 8x57 or something like that. I had my eye on a few lever guns as they seemed to be a go to for this type of application. I want it to be light and short barreled without too much recoil, so rounds can still be placed where they are needed. I was contemplating a 30-30, but I'm not sure how hard it hits if you had a run in with a grumpy bear.

What would you suggest, and do any of you have a rifle for a use such as this? Pros cons of different options are welcome.

Sounds like you need a Lee Enfield #4 jungle carbine. That or a well used Winchester 94. I would just prefer the le as a truck/atv gun that could be put into action a bit quicker with the dbm.

The Lee Enfield's are getting scarce ,but a bubba'd Mosin ,has no collector value,is cheap and virtualy indestructible ,heck, even an SKS would fill the bill....and all of them were designed for battle field conditions

I will put my vote down for a savage axis. Get a gun smith to add a good set of sights. would walk all over anything mentioned so far.

What about a used Remington 760 pump carbine (18"bbl) in 30-06,....... cheap, reliable, fast repeating for bear defense, 30-06 with 180-220 RN bullets packs good punch for stopping a bear.
If the carbine model 760 is too hard to find you could always pick one up with the longer bbl and have it shortened.

Also if you won't be using it for a longer range shooter, a good Red Dot sight would make it one hell of a fast action woods rifle.

Enfield sporter, SKS in any form, highwr cal 8mm with decent barrel and sights and lookout. If you want one rifle to do it all a 8x57 sported will drop anything world over and cost ya under $400. Bear, Moose, cayotes, even chipmunk. If your using at a rough and ready you at least want to always hit what your aiming at. For me that's 8mm

OP, what part of the country are you in. Are there caliber restriction you must abide to? What is the longest range you'll shoot across? Will you scope the rifle? What is your budget? What is the largest game you'll likely encounter? Do you want a detachable magazine?

Hello,

I use a Mosin 91/30 with shims, modified front sight, and two-stage trigger.

This rifle is about as tough as I could ask for.

I carry a 1911 pistol with cast loads, as well.

Regards,

Josh

Im in AB. I have lots of places to get out to range, but I think this one would be for more short ranges 200ish max perhaps. I know the limitations of a lever gun, and am okay to work within that. I'm not sure about a scope.... I'm terrible with irons, so I was thinking low power scope, red dot or possibly peep sites. One interesting gun is the ruger american ranch in 450 bushmaster... if the bullets were a more common size I'd be more interested.

The 450 bushmaster would be cool . Any of the above would do the job though . I've had a bubba'd Lee Enfield for years that is my rough use rifle , it's worked flawlessly . I was just offered a cut down Moisin Nagant for $150 bones that comes with 40 rounds of S&B soft points and it's a decent shooter as well ( 2 to 2 1/2 inch groups at one hundred ). I don't really need it , but that's never stopped me before . If you're looking for something that can take a beating long term , a bubba'd milsurp is hard to beat , plus they're just fun to shoot . Since you're looking for something with aperture sights , the No 4 would be my choice .
