Hello Everyone,

I’m looking to buy a mossberg 500 all purpose, with a 28” vent barrel

https://www.cabelas.ca/product/38520/mossberg-500-12-gauge-classic-field-pump-action-shotgun

If I add an additional barrel the 18.5 home defense .

Is this a wise thing to do? Or do I have other options?

Looking for something to shoot clay, and home defense.

I have seen the field security combo, but from reviews online it seems more of a cheaper version of the all purpose model

Thanks for the help!

I think you mean bear defense?

I have a 500 with the vent rib barrel and it’s not an unwieldy firearm at that lengh but the 18.5 barrel goes on at night around camp and it gets stored with that barrel on too. It’s a handy little package.

Sure bear defense too...

Are you using a synthetic stock setup or the traditional wood? Any advantages over either?

Thanks again

I have the sga stock from magpul as I started with a killer deal on the Marine JIC which only has a pistol grip. That said I am a big fan of the magpul grip as my Wrists do not like straight stocks. The marincoat and plastic stock make for a pretty rugged package.

I have the combo that comes with the 28" vent rib and 18" cylinder bore. It's a versatile piece. Has proven to be very reliable. I think I paid less than $300 about 7 years ago.

I hate 28" barrels even for skeet. I hunted and shot skeet 2 years extremely well with the Mossberg 500 A 20" version. Comes with the longer magazine tube. Even good for home defense.

I cant find one similar on cabeles tho. Is similar to the 590 style.

I still remember having to use a stick one day to limit my magazine tube......Good times...

Thanks for the info

I was told some clay ranges won’t allow smaller barrels , have ever come across that?

With the combo you have I assume you can’t use a choke, for the 28” barrel any drawbacks for you?

Thanks

I've got the Maverick 88 version with 18.5 and 28 inch barrel, its my cheapest and most favourite shotgun. That 28 inch barrel is a bit like waving a hockeystick around but it shoots amazing at trap with the full/modified choke it came with.

Ditched the factory stock as well, threw a kicklite on.

No, no removable chokes. It came as a modified and that has served me well. Have used it for lots of analysis, geese and ducks with no issues. It stays in my truck all fall.

I have the Mossberg 500 combo with 18.5 and 28. Taught my son and many boy scouts in Arizona how to trap and skeet with the 28. It now stands ready behind the door on our farm in Oklahoma with the 18 and buckshot in the mag, shot in a cuff on stock.

Eta: great gun for minimal money. Has never had any issue.
