Replacing SKS barrel with 303 LE barrel

I'm thinking about taking off a PINNED barrel on SKS and replacing it with 303 LE barrel, to make SA as a pull bolt action. I don't care about rear sight assembly, because the mag would be hold by different way and use a scope. The barrel would be turned down with no thread. What do you think?

Interesting, as all these projects are. Sounds like ammo will get expensive. Lol.

Will need some pretty fine machining to get that bolt head to hold a rimmed cartridge properly.

Really if you want a straight pull .303 why not just pick up a Ross?

April fools!

I think that the length of the action for starts is not long enough to acomadate 303

I think you are absolutely correct. This would be a pretty extensive mod.

My guess is he'll be cutting the barrel to x39.

99% sure you are not correct. If he wanted a straight-pull bolt action in 7.62X39 he could just remove the piston from the SKS!

The work involved in resizing the bolt face from the rimless 7.62 x 39 to the rimmed .303, plus all of the mods to the receiver itself would made that project a waste of time. The poster said he was going to use the magazine as well so I'm pretty sure he's going to chamber it in 7.62 x 39mm. As a .303 barrel has a different twist it would also allow him to use different bullets as well.

And although removing the pistol would made it a straight pull it would also be blowing gas back into your face a whole bunch and very unpleasantly. I do not recommend this.

would the SKS receiver be able to hold the extra pressure of a .303 brit cartridge if OP was actually planning on using that?

Why, I know it is fools day, proper day for this idea.

As I mentioned above, the twist rate of the Enfield barrel would enable different bullets to be used rather than the standard 123 grain soviet weight. Might be a waste of time for some but what the hell, it's his time.

I've got a Savage Axis I barrelled up in 7.62x39mm using a heavy savage .308 barrel, recut, rechambered and screwed on. Used a .223 bolt head and turned it out to 7.62x39mm rim dia and it shoots great, quite accurate actually and I regularly load 150 grn match BTHP .308 bullets for it.

What is the twist rate in a 7.62x39 barrel?

Did some googling. Twist in SKS barrel appears to be slightly faster than that of a Lee Enfield barrel.

big ass waste of time to end up with the same thing why would you think an enfield bbl will be any better

I was thinking in case the government restricts all SA, I still want to shoot my Chinese SKS in the bush without any permits. I don't need a bayo and don't want to cut the lug off and weld the gas hole. And don't want to spend $500 for a barrel. Can buy 303 LE for $50. And don't have to ream it for the cartridge and threaded for the receiver. I'm a cheap guy.

Cheap, yes, not very knowledgeable either. Not dissing you

You can likely find a decent sporter take off barrel at a gunshow in the $50 range. By the way, you can use any 30 calibre take off barrel. Not enough difference to cause any issues.

Then it will cost around $150 to have your old barrel removed, unless it's pressed and pinned, cut back the chamber and make up a thread tenon, have it reamed to proper dimensions and installed.properly, add the sight etc.

Cheaper to purchase another rifle.

It's cheaper to just buy a video game and play make-believe, especially if you're a black gun guy. Chicken is cheaper than venison, too.

A .303 barrel only needs trimming off the chamber to fit x39; no reamer needed.

Many 303 barrels have bore diameters as large as .315. I've had a couple that were even larger. SKS bores measure .310 on average and are pretty consistent.

There is more to this than you are saying.

If the OP has to pay to have the work done it will cost him more than another rifle. What's hard to see about that???? Some SKS rifles have press fit barrel tenons and are pinned. Some have threaded tenons and aren't pinned. Don't forget, he also has to install sights. The list goes on and it isn't nearly as cheap/easy as you allude.
